Book Description
This book tells the story of Bali—the "paradise island of the Pacific"—its rulers and its people, and their encounters with the Western world. Balinese history tells a fascinating story. For a thousand years, the peculiar splendor of Balinese–Hindu culture came very close to satisfying the social, religious and artistic needs of the people. The arrival of European visitors in the 1920s and 1930s soon made the island's magical charms known to the outside world, and forever changed the "real, unspoiled" Bali. This is the story about the vulnerability—and durability—of an ancient culture to the modern world. There already exists a wealth of literature on Balinese art and thought and the singularly beautiful Balinese way of life which often seems to outsiders like a lavishly costumed pageant continuously and merrily played out against a superbly scenic tropical backdrop. A new introduction by Adrian Vickers, a professor of history at the University of Sydney, places the book into the context of the literature on Bali and the impact that the Western world and tourism are currently having on the island.

Book Description
This book traces the particularities of music migration and tourism in different global settings, and provides current, even new perspectives for ethnomusicological research on globalizing musics in transit. The dual focus on tourism and migration is central to debates on globalization, and their examination—separately or combined—offers a useful lens on many key questions about where globalization is taking us: questions about identity and heritage, commoditization, historical and cultural representation, hybridity, authenticity and ownership, neoliberalism, inequality, diasporization, the relocation of allegiances, and more. Moreover, for the first time, these two key phenomena—tourism and migration—are studied conjointly, as well as interdisciplinary, in order to derive both parallels and contrasts. While taking diverse perspectives in embracing the contemporary musical landscape, the collection offers a range of research methods and theoretical approaches from ethnomusicology, anthropology, cultural geography, sociology, popular music studies, and media and communication. In so doing, Musics in Transit provides a rich exemplification of the ways that all forms of musical culture are becoming transnational under post-global conditions, sustained by both global markets and musics in transit, and to which both tourists and diasporic cosmopolitans make an important contribution.

Book Description
“The Moneyya Chronicles” begins at a time when the drums of the Vietnam War were beating loudly on America’s shores, creating fear and confusion in the hearts of those who were soon to attain manhood. Through the mediums of poetry, prose and painting, Bhikkhu Moneyya explores questions that arose as a natural consequence of the times and describes the path that he chose to answer them, first as a freewheeling traveler, later as an ashram resident and finally as a Theravada Buddhist monk. Transcending the social and political dialectics of daily life, this is a journey of the mind and heart that will rouse, entertain and ultimately beckon the reader onto a path laid out some 2600 years ago, in a land where a good friend was more than just a friend but one who could help a seeker open his eyes to the hidden truth within.
