Book Description
In April of ‘93 and March of ‘97 the editors of Western Outdoor News took the California Department of Fish and Game to task for under-reporting mountain lion involvement in disappearances. University of Idaho Statistic Professor Kirk Trigsted conducted Permutation Tests on multiple disappearances in nine different areas of Ca. that clearly rejected that they were random events. In each of the nine all had vanished during time-frames and in areas that could have encompassed the life span and the home range of a single cougar. Letter from Marv Hagedorn Idaho District 20’s representative, “Regarding the information you have been putting together on the Mule Deer herds here in ...SW.[Idaho]. I agree we are selling tags for a product that does not exist and have been doing it for a very long time. Following his only conviction, the author and his receptionists passed polygraph tests disputing the three arresting officer’s testimonies that he was at his shop the day in question, and had individually confessed his guilt to each of them. Moreover Warden Stegall in his affidavit claimed that the author signed the evidence receipt. However the document contains only Donna his receptionist’s signature. Despite the conviction, which focused on bighorn sheep, San Bernardino National Forest’s head wildlife biologist Steve N Loe, giving him the combinations to the areas locked gates authorized the author, on July 30th of ‘92, to survey the San Gabriel Mountain’s Nelson Bighorn populations. California Legislator Bill Leonard after the author forced a rollback in D-14’s hunting dates wrote, “It is commendable that citizens such as yourself feel so strongly that you help bring about actions by government agencies.”

Fans of Lisa Greenwald and Wendy Mass are sure to fall head-over-heels for this funny, sweet story of crushes, competition, and the confusing reality of middle school. "Heartbreak is for suckers." -- Jenna Sakai When Jenna gets dumped over winter break, it confirms what she learned from her parents' messy divorce: Relationships are risky and only lead to disappointment. So even though she still has to see her ex-boyfriend Elliott at newspaper club, Jenna is going to be totally heartless this semester -- no boys, just books. But keeping her cool isn't always easy. Jenna's chief competition for a big journalism scholarship is none other than Elliott. Her best friend Keiko always seems busy with her own boyfriend. And cute-but-incredibly-annoying Rin Watanabe keeps stealing her booth at the diner she's been hiding at every day after school. Rin is every bit as stubborn and detached as Jenna. And the more Jenna gets to know him, the more intriguing a mystery he seems. Soon Jenna is starting to realize that being a loner is kind of, well, lonely. And letting people in might just be a risk worth taking.

Book Description
Decision making is a critical element in the field of medicine that can lead to life-or-death outcomes, yet it is an element fraught with complex and conflicting variables, diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, patient preferences and values, and costs. Together, decisions made by physicians, patients, insurers, and policymakers determine the quality of health care, quality that depends inherently on counterbalancing risks and benefits and competing objectives such as maximizing life expectancy versus optimizing quality of life or quality of care versus economic realities. Broadly speaking, concepts in medical decision making (MDM) may be divided into two major categories: prescriptive and descriptive. Work in the area of prescriptive MDM investigates how medical decisions should be done using complicated analyses and algorithms to determine cost-effectiveness measures, prediction methods, and so on. In contrast, descriptive MDM studies how decisions actually are made involving human judgment, biases, social influences, patient factors, and so on. The Encyclopedia of Medical Decision Making gives a gentle introduction to both categories, revealing how medical and healthcare decisions are actually made—and constrained—and how physician, healthcare management, and patient decision making can be improved to optimize health outcomes. Key Features Discusses very general issues that span many aspects of MDM, including bioethics; health policy and economics; disaster simulation modeling; medical informatics; the psychology of decision making; shared and team medical decision making; social, moral, and religious factors; end-of-life decision making; assessing patient preference and patient adherence; and more Incorporates both quantity and quality of life in optimizing a medical decision Considers characteristics of the decisionmaker and how those characteristics influence their decisions Presents outcome measures to judge the quality or impact of a medical decision Examines some of the more commonly encountered biostatistical methods used in prescriptive decision making Provides utility assessment techniques that facilitate quantitative medical decision making Addresses the many different assumption perspectives the decision maker might choose from when trying to optimize a decision Offers mechanisms for defining MDM algorithms With comprehensive and authoritative coverage by experts in the fields of medicine, decision science and cognitive psychology, and healthcare management, this two-volume Encyclopedia is a must-have resource for any academic library.
