Questo volume non è dedicato al solo sistema di Avicenna, ma alla descrizione di tutta una parte del movimento filosofico che ha avuto luogo in Oriente tra l'Egira e la morte di Avicenna, movimento in cui il sistema di questo filosofo appare come un punto culminante. Accanto alle sette e alle scuole a cui si fa riferimento in questo libro, ce ne sono altre che sono rimaste escluse: le scuole teologiche; sette politiche e mistiche. La teologia è presente solo all'inizio come punto di partenza e sotto forma di metafisica. La politica, viene brevemente trattata nei passaggi in cui è disegnato il quadro storico in cui si sono mossi i nostri eroi; si è anche parlato un po', in vari punti, della politica a partire da una scienza separata che fa parte della filosofia, secondo la tradizione greca. Quanto al misticismo, i nostri autori ci porteranno spesso alla sua soglia, ma ci rifiuteremo di impegnarci in esso e, sebbene costretti a dire poche parole per completare la metafisica, non la studieremo come un sistema indipendente. Le scienze su cui avremo particolare attenzione sono: prima di tutto la logica che, oggi è trascurata, ma occupava un posto importante nella filosofia di quel tempo; poi, strettamente collegate tra loro, fisica, psicologia e metafisica. I tre capitoli che dedicheremo a queste ultime scienze, preceduti da un'introduzione sulla logica e seguita da un complemento mistico, rappresenteranno l'essenziale del sistema a cui è risultato il movimento del pensiero oggetto di questo libro. Chiediamo al lettore di avvicinarsi a questo libro senza pregiudizi, sarà un bene se si lascerà guidare da noi come ci siamo lasciati guidare dai nostri autori. Crediamo sia giunto il momento di fare questa sintesi e di consegnare al pubblico letterato il materiale elaborato nei dispensari dell'Orientalismo.
