Interestingly, complete scientific articles in the field have not received much scholarly attention. Research on academic writing in general, and on the research article genre in particular, has investigated the generic structure of the Abstract, or of the Introduction section of the research article, with little attention being paid to other sections (Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions). Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study investigates the move structures of all the sections of the research article, including the Abstract. The study explores the sequencing and structure of moves, and how linguistic features are used to realize authorial stance in the moves. The data are drawn from a randomly selected corpus of forty recent research articles from two key journals in each of two disciplines, applied linguistics and educational technology. The findings show that there are some differences between the two closely-related disciplines in terms of move structure and typical linguistic features of moves. However more significant is the finding that authorial stance, as expressed in linguistic realizations of moves, varies systematically across moves in both disciplines. The study provides a comprehensive description of the move structure of the entire research article in the fields of applied linguistics and educational technology, and of the typical linguistic features of the moves in different sections. The work builds on earlier research on research articles, in particular that of Swales, to develop an integrated analytic framework that might be used to study research articles in a range of disciplines.

Linguists usually discuss language or dialects in terms of groups of speakers. Believing that patterns can be seen more clearly in the group than the individual, researchers often present group scores with no indication of the variation within the group. Even though linguists acknowledge that no two individuals speak alike, few study individual variation and voice. Barbara Johnstone makes a case for the individual's importance and idiosyncrasies in language and linguistics. Using theoretical arguments and discourse analysis, along with linguistic examples from a variety of speakers and settings, Johnstone illustrates how speakers draw on linguistic models associated with class, ethnicity, gender, and region, among others, to construct an individual voice. In doing so Johnstone shows that certain important questions in sociolinguistics and pragmatics can only be answered with reference to individual speakers. Discourse on the Move is the first book-length exploration of how corpus-based methods can be used for discourse analysis, applied to the description of discourse organization. The primary goal is to bring these two analytical perspectives together: undertaking a detailed discourse analysis of each individual text, but doing so in terms that can be generalized across all texts of a corpus. The book explores two major approaches to this task: ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’. In the ‘top-down’ approach, the functional components of a genre are determined first, and then all texts in a corpus are analyzed in terms of those components. In contrast, textual components emerge from the corpus analysis in the bottom-up approach, and the discourse organization of individual texts is then analyzed in terms of linguistically-defined textual categories. Both approaches are illustrated through case studies of discourse structure in particular genres: fund-raising letters, biology/biochemistry research articles, and university classroom teaching.
