Book Description
Excerpt from Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Charitable purpose, and published in the Daily Telegraph in Sydney, they have beguiled many weary hours of their author at a time of much anxiety for all those who, like himself, were interested in the great pas toral industry of the country. Iarn no judge of their merits, if, indeed, they have any. The first person who suggested their collection in this form was the late Chief Justice, Sir James Martin, who was pleased to speak in terms somewhat too laudatory of them, and in his rapid manner said, You must put them in a book, you know - you must put them in a book. Well, here they are in a book. There is little or nothing imagina tive in the volume. The Stories Retold are chie y gathered from the Press records of the day, and from the word of mouth of old colonial friends who have some recollection of the events narrated. The Sketches of Country Life are derived almost wholly from my own experiences. The descriptions of men and scenery are exactly set down as they appeared to me. So many wonderful changes have taken place in colonial society since I was young, that I venture to h0pe the book may not prove uninteresting to those Who have not been eyewitnesses of those changes. Book Description
Excerpt from Australian Tales, and Sketches From Real Life Most of the following tales and sketches have appeared in the Sydney Mail; and I have good reason to believe that they have been favourably received by thousands of subscribers to that influential newspaper. In publishing them in a volume, I am yielding to the persuasion of many kind friends, who have expressed their belief that they Will be well received, and be useful. I have spent much time in altering and improving all the articles; and they Will be fresh to my old readers. The fact of the articles having appeared in the columns of the Sydney Mail, will be a sufficient guarantee to parents, that they need not scruple to place the volume in the hands of their children. I will only add, that there is nothing controversial or see tarian in it; and I have used my utmost efforts to make it both amusing and instructive. English readers will find many phases of Australian life depicted for which I claim this merit, that their accuracy may be relied on. Book Description
Excerpt from Under the Street Lamp: Vignettes of Australian Bush Life Much of the literature dealing with Australian bush life has represented, and for the most part, faithfully, the rougher, and it may be said the coarser and lower, elements in the charac ter of the back-blocks worker. But every one who knows the true Australian bushman knows that he has another side. Against the almost universal indulgence in drink, gambling, profanity, and general rowdyism, must be placed many noble characteristics. Book Description
Excerpt from The Squatter's Dream a Story of Australian Life He was a great gardener, and had the best fruit trees and some of the best flowers in that part of the country. At all odd times, that is, early in the morning before it was time to dress for breakfast, in afternoons when he had been' out all day, and generally when he had nothing particular to do, he was accustomed to dig patiently, and to plant and prune, and drain and trench, in this garden of his. He was a strong fellow, who had always lived a steady kind of life, so that he had a constitution utterly unimpaired, and spirits to match. These last were so good that he generally rose in the morning with the kind of feeling which every boy experiences during the holidays - that the day was not long enough for all the enjoyable occupations which were before him, and that it was incumbent on him to rise up and enter into possession of these delights with as little loss of time as might be.
