Book Description
Lietuvybe Down Under is a book about the experiences of Lithuanian migrants to Australia, and specifically about the desire of migrants to ‘feel’ and ‘be’ Lithuanian while living away from their homeland. Lietuvybe embraces the desire to be ‘visible’ both within and outside the Lithuanian community through language and their traditions of song, dance, music and the arts. ‘This book should be read far and wide in Australia; it provides an opportunity to understand the hopes and expectations of migrants, as well as the pain, fear, racism, challenges, loss, nostalgia and confusion about “where is my true home?” that migrants experience.’ Catherine Malcolm, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne

Book Description
The displacement of Lithuanians at the end of World War II was believed to be temporary. Communism would be expelled and they would return home. This did not materialize and new homes were sought. From 1947 almost 10,000 Lithuanian Displaced Persons came to Australia, 1,500 settled in Adelaide. This is a collective of stories about the Lithuanian community in South Australia, about the cultural and social clubs that formed. One thing united them all and never wavered, the hope that Lithuania would be free and that they could return home.

This book is written by the women or their descendants telling their own stories. It tells the story of why and in what capacity they volunteered. It reveals their talents and hardships, and their love for Lithuania and family. This book is a testimony to their hard work and dedication and is hoped will be a lasting legacy which will inspire future community members and forge a deep sense of identity among them.
