Book Description
Sustainable development is still seen by authorities as an abstract concept. Local Environmental Auditing will help put it into practice. The book provides a comprehensive guide to monitoring the state of the local environment and establishing the impacts of local actions on global issues, and shows how current local authority policy and practice can be adapted to recognize environmental priorities. The authors provide both a guide to and an assessment of the subject: they link the processes with the issues, with specific information on carrying out the audit (including checklists, case studies and standards) and a detailed discussion of the issues and choices which local authorities may face. Clearly structured and accessible, this will be an essential handbook, both for local government departments and other local organizations, and students in a wide range of subjects, including environmental science and health, town planning, urban and rural studies, social science and politics.

Script from the year 2006 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: The concept of sustainable development was introduced in the early 1980’s; it is seen as the key to economic, social and even cultural survival. Preventive environmental protection should be the guideline in the planning of projects. Environmental management starts at the level of programmes and polices, continues with plans and decisions for proposals and needs control and monitoring during the operation period. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an integral part of the planning process; it is incorporated into existing legal systems and administrative procedures. Responsible for a successful EIA are: Screening, scoping, public participation, preparation of EIA-document and decision. The EIA-document contents: Description of project, outline of alternatives, description of the environment, description of environmental impacts, description of mitigating factors, difficulties compiling information and a nontechnical summary. Effective environmental management depends on reproducible environmental assessment.

Chapters: Environmental audit, Environmental impact assessment, Environmental manager, Environmental resources management, Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment (Denmark), Sustainability and environmental management, Sustainable management. Excerpt: An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an assessment of the possible positive or negative impact that a proposed project may have on the environment, together consisting of the environmental, social and economic aspects. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that decision makers consider the ensuing environmental impacts when deciding whether to proceed with a project. The International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) defines an environmental impact assessment as "the process of identifying, predicting, evaluating and mitigating the biophysical, social, and other relevant effects of development proposals prior to major decisions being taken and commitments made." EIAs are unique in that they do not require adherence to a predetermined environmental outcome, but rather they require decision makers to account for environmental values in their decisions and to justify those decisions in light of detailed environmental studies and public comments on the potential environmental impacts of the proposal. EIAs began to be used in the 1960s as part of a rational decision making process. It involved a technical evaluation that would lead to objective decision making. EIA was made legislation in the US in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) 1969. It has since evolved as it has been used increasingly in many countries around the world. As per Jay et al.(2006), EIA as it is practiced today, is being used as a decision aiding tool rather than decision making tool. There is growing dissent on the use of EIA as its...
