Auditory Physiology and Perception documents the proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Hearing held in Careens, France, 9-14 June 1991. The aim of the symposium was to promote exchanges between hearing scientists working with different approaches from cell biology to psychology. The volume is organized into 10 parts. Part I contains papers on the biology of inner ear cells. Part II presents studies on auditory periphery functioning. Part III examines frequency selectivity while Part IV contains papers that deal with the subject of pitch. The papers in Part V examine the coding of intensity. Parts VI and VII discuss temporal analyses and spectral shape analysis, respectively. Part VIII takes up spectro-temporal processing. Part IX covers binaural interactions and sound localization. The studies in Part X focus on pathologies, such as the relations between evoked otoacoustic emissions and pure tone audiometry and the effect of short duration acoustic trauma on activity of single neurons in the ventral cochlear nucleus. The final chapter of the text is a tribute to Professor Zwicker, a leading scientist in hearing, who passed away some months before the symposium.

after heated and often bitter debates, SIEBENMANN'S opinion finally prevailed, i. e. , a contribution to cochlear lesions due to vibrations of the floor transmitted via bone conduction could not be demonstrated. For one thing, it was hard to see how appreciable amounts of energy could reach the ears in this manner, considering the attenuation that is bound to occur across each of the many joints along the pathway involved. In some older audiological surveys conducted in industry (e. g. , TEMKIN, 1933), groups of workmen were found who displayed signs of apical-turn lesions, i. e. , low-tone hearing losses for air and for bone. Such lesions could not be expected to results from exposure to air-borne sounds because of the low-frequency attenu ation of the middle ear. Although WITTMAACK'S explanation, which was frequently invoked in such reports, does no longer appear tenable, such apical-turn lesions could conceivably be caused by bone conduction components of high-intensity noise in the sense of BEKESY (1948). - As far as I am aware of, no newer studies have been conducted in this problem area, and the older experiments and/or surveys were done at times before signal parameters could be precisely controlled or measured. A detailed, critical review of the older studies on the potential contribution of bone-conducted energy to industrial hearing loss and its underlying pathology may be found in Werner (1940) who, incidently, favored SIEBENMANN'S point of VIew.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 15th International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held at the Hotel Regio, Santa Marta de Tormes, Salamanca, Spain, between 1st and 5th June 2009. Since its inception in 1969, this Symposium has been a forum of excellence for debating the neurophysiological basis of auditory perception, with computational models as tools to test and unify physiological and perceptual theories. Every paper in this symposium includes two of the following: auditory physiology, psychoph- ics or modeling. The topics range from cochlear physiology to auditory attention and learning. While the symposium is always hosted by European countries, p- ticipants come from all over the world and are among the leaders in their fields. The result is an outstanding symposium, which has been described by some as a “world summit of auditory research. ” The current volume has a bottom-up structure from “simpler” physiological to more “complex” perceptual phenomena and follows the order of presentations at the meeting. Parts I to III are dedicated to information processing in the peripheral au- tory system and its implications for auditory masking, spectral processing, and c- ing.
