A sample of 614 journeymen terminal ATCSs at 17 high-density IFR airports, and 514 ATC trainees were administered a questionnaire which asked them to list what they liked best and what they liked least about ATC work in general; in addition, ATCSs made similar lists for work at their assigned facilities. Responses were surveyed for clusters, and nine response categories were established. The frequency of responses within each category was tabulated. The pattern of responses from ATCSs was noted from one facility to another. The categories of job challenge, job tasks, career characteristics, and salary contained the most positive responses about ATC work, while the categories of management, work schedule, career characteristics, and job tasks had the most negative responses. There was a high degree of similarity between these findings and results obtained in motivational studies of other professions.

792 JOURNEYMAN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS FROM ARTCC, TRACON, and FSS facilities answered a four-part questionnaire concerning (a) what they liked and disliked about ATC work, (b) how much they liked or disliked certain specific aspects of ATC work, (c) how they felt about shift work, and (d) their level of job satisfaction. The three ATC specialties are compared for agreement in their job-related attitudes. The most negative attitudes were associated with night shifts. The findings are discussed in terms of the similarity of the controller groups to members of other occupations, and in terms of the significance of the findings for improving controller morale.

Air traffic control specialists (ATCSs) and airway facility technicians (AFTs) were compared on measures of job attitudes and interests. A total of 792 ATCSs and 2,366 AFTs completed the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB) and questionnaires concerning job satisfaction and job attitudes. Both groups indicated high overall job satisfaction and general agreement about areas of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. However, ATCSs reported more satisfaction than AFTs from various aspects of the work itself and from salary, while AFTs were more satisfied with responsibility, working conditions, and Civil Service retirement. The AFTs were more favorable to management than ATCSs. On the SVIB, ATCSs had higher scores than AFTs on scales concerned with interpersonally oriented vocations (e.g., social service, sales) and lower scores on technical-scientific occupational scales. The findings suggest that these two employee groups have much in common with respect to their attitudes toward work while at the same time having certain discriminable characteristics that have implications for both personnel and motivational programs.
