Book Description
Motivated by the challenges and limitation of existing experimental techniques, this work elaborates our recent proposal for the precision measurement of atomic parity nonconservation by quantum metrology with an entangled pair of trapped ions. Although the technique is fundamentally based on an existing proposal, it can potentially reach a figure of merit twice as high for an exceedingly tiny observable, yet to be measured in any ion trap experiment. The systematic of the technique have been shown to be better controlled as compared to other experiments. Since the goal of the experiment is to test the Standard Model of physics, the measured parity violating transitional dipole matrix element has to be compared with the theory of competitive precision. The choice of the element therefore plays an important role for the success of the experiment. Barium and radium ions have been compared from this perspective. The work presents the theoretical study on nuclear spin dependent atomic parity nonconservation and nuclear anapole moment in different isotopes of these ions and proposes specific transitions that are experimentally feasible.

Book Description
Khriplovich (physics, Novosibirsk U., USSR) describes his own work and that of others in demonstrating the first decisive confirmations of the unified model of atomic electroweak interactions. The studies of weak interaction by optical methods, at the boundary between elementary particle physics and atomic spectroscopy, have revealed parity nonconservation in atomic transitions. He considers the effects of space-inversion and time-reversal violations in atoms, molecules, and condensed matter. First published in Russian in 1981, and translated from the 1988 second edition. Book Description
A review of atomic calculations relevant to the Bi parity nonconservation experiments is presented. The following were included to date: relativistic Hartree-Fock, intermediate coupling, configuration mixing and RPA-type shielding. There is disagreement between two shielding calculations. Using mean values of these shielding corrections, one obtains for the mixing ratios R = -10.5 (876 nm) and -14(648 nm); based on uncertainty in the shielding and neglected diagrams, the theoretical uncertainty was estimated to be less than 50%. There is a disagreement of five and three standard deviations with the UW and Oxford experiments respectively, but agreement with the Novosibirsk experiment. 16 references.

Book Description
In Experiment, Right or Wrong, Allan Franklin continues his investigation of the history and philosophy of experiment presented in his previous book, The Neglect of Experiment. In this new study, Franklin considers the fallibility and corrigibility of experimental results and presents detailed histories of two such episodes: 1) the experiment and the development of the theory of weak interactions from Fermi's theory in 1934 to the V-A theory of 1957 and 2) atomic parity violation experiments and the Weinberg-Salam unified theory of electroweak interactions of the 1970s and 1980s. In these episodes Franklin demonstrates not only that experimental results can be wrong, but also that theoretical calculations and the comparison between experiment and theory can also be incorrect. In the second episode, Franklin contrasts his view of an "evidence model" of science in which questions of theory choice, confirmation, and refutation are decided on the basis of reliable experimental evidence, with that proposed by the social constructivists.

Book Description
The measurement of parity nonconservation (PNC) in atoms constitutes an important test of electroweak interactions in nuclei. Great progress has been made over the last 20 years in performing these measurements with ever increasing accuracies. To date the experimental accuracies have reached a level of 1 to 2%. In all cases, except for cesium, the theoretical atomic structure uncertainties now limit the comparison of these measurements to the predictions of the standard model. New measurements involving the ratio of Stark interference transition rates for a series of Cs or Fr radioisotopes are foreseen as a way of eliminating these atomic structure uncertainties. The use of magneto-optical traps to collect and concentrate the much smaller number of radioactive atoms that are produced is considered to be one of the key steps in realizing these measurements. Plans for how these measurements will be done and progress made to date are outlined.
