Book Description
Astatine is - besides radon and francium - the only natural radioelement which only has short-Lived isotopes, thereby excluding experiments with . . weighable" amounts of the element. This implies that all available data on physics and chemistry of this element are 12 16 based on experiments on the tracer scale with 10- to 10- g - and this will also not change in future because no longer-Lived isotopes as yet known are to be expected. Due to the fact that the only isotope of At occurring in the natural decay series, 219At, results from the 0. 005% a-branching of 223Fr which itself is produced by the only 1. 38% a-branching of 227 Ac - a member of the 235U series - there is no chance to recover substantial amounts of 219At from natural sources for sCientific research of At. All studies, therefore, are being done with the isotopes 209At to 211At having half-lives in the few hours region and being obtained by irradiation of bismuth with a-particles via (a,xn) reactions or by proton irradiation of heavy elements via spallation reactions. The mostly used isotope is 7. 22 h 211At. The fast separation of the obtained At isotopes is no very difficult procedure and is either being done by wet adsorption-precipitation techniques or making use of its high volatility by destilling in air.

Particle and Wave
Author: Benjamin Landry
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022609622X
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 74
Book Description
Are we alone? If so, Particle and Wave insists that we need not be lonely. Here the periodic table of elements—a system familiar to many of us from high school chemistry—unfolds in a series of unexpected meanings with connotations public, personal, and existential. Based on a logic that considers the atomic symbol an improvised phoneme, Particle and Wave is keenly attuned to the qualities of voice and concerned with how these improvisations fall on the listening ear. From the most recent housing bust, to the artistic visions of Christo and Jeanne Claude, to the labors of the Curies, to Pliny the Younger’s account of the eruption of Vesuvius, culture and world histories are recontextualized through the lens of personal experience. Muscular, precise, structurally varied, and imagistic, these poems engage in lyricism yet resist mere confession. In doing so they project the self as a composite, speaking in a variety of registers, from the nursery rhyme songster, to the ascetic devotee, to the unapologetic sensualist. They welcome all comers and elbow the bounded physical world to make way for a dynamic, new subjectivity.

From Arsenic to Zirconium
Author: Peter Davern
Publisher: No Starch Press
ISBN: 1718500270
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
93 short poems that teach about the elements of the periodic table. Indulge your love of the periodic table with this collection of poems and fun facts about the chemical elements that make up our world. From arsenic to zirconium, this book describes the characteristics, history, and quirks of each element. The poems are a launching point for a guided tour of the elements filled with fascinating scientific trivia. For instance: Antimony, used to treat constipation in the Middle Ages, may have killed Mozart. There's arsenic in your prawns! (But don't worry, it won't harm you.) Erbium is used to "dope" optical fiber amplifiers that make your YouTube videos download faster. Iridium was key to the meteor theory of why dinosaurs went extinct. You'll find potassium in both bananas and gunpowder. Sulfur plays a role in whether your hair is curly or straight. Expand your library of scientific literature with this playful and poetic romp through the periodic table.

Book Description
The Gmelin Formula Index and its First Supplement covered those volumes of the Eighth Edition of the Gmelin Handbook which had been issued up to the end of 1979. The present Second Supplement updates the Index by inclusion of the volumes which appeared until the end of 1987. With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1922 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remained the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting and further data handling were performed with the aid of a suite of computer programs developed by staff members of the former" Online Group" of the Gmelin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and the printer, "Universitätsdruckerei H. Stürtz AG, Würzburg ". The present Second Supplement is intended to be the last one which is issued in printed form. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database wh ich is available to the scientific community via STN.
