Innovation in Cold-Formed Steel Framing
Author: J. R. Smith

ISBN:
Category : Drywall

Book Description
ASTM C645-14 Standard Specification for Nonstructural Steel Framing Members and ASTM C955-11c Standard Specification for Load-Bearing (Transverse and Axial) Steel Studs, Runners (Tracks), and Bracing or Bridging for Screw Application of Gypsum Panel Products and Metal Plaster Bases define the standard properties of nonstructural and structural framing members. The past quarter century has seen a dramatic increase in the use of nonstructural, ASTM C645-compliant, cold-formed steel framing members for use in interior construction assemblies--as well as increased use of structural, ASTM C955-compliant, cold-formed steel framing members for uses in interior and exterior structural assemblies. Along with an increase in the use of these innovative and versatile construction products, significant technology innovations that improved the structural performance, coating durability, quality assurance, and material efficiency of the framing members have also taken place. These two specifications, which govern these members, have undergone dramatic changes that have resulted in more detailed and complete specifications. Performance requirements were added to the standards to complement the prescriptive requirements. Concurrently, industry organizations such as the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) have developed and adopted code compliance certification programs to provide quality assurance to users of their various members' products. This paper reviews the history and evolution of the framing standards and describes the ongoing efforts to adapt these standards to industry innovations. The paper will also explore the current quality assurance practices that evaluate and audit equivalent technology (EQ).

Commentary on the Prescriptive Method for Residential Cold-Formed Steel Framing
Author: Nader R. Elhajj
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 0788143301

Languages : en
Pages : 94
Book Description
Use of cold formed steel framing in the residential market has increased over the past years. Its price stability, consistent quality, similarity to conventional framing, successes in the commercial market, & resistance to fire, rot, & termites have attracted the attention of many builders. However, lack of prescriptive construction requirements has prevented this alternative material from gaining wider acceptance among home builders & code officials. This handbook provides background, engineering assumptions & methods, & detailed calculations for this method. Illustrated.

Cold-Formed Steel Design
Author: Wei-Wen Yu
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119487390
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 528
Book Description
Provides the latest AISI North American specifications for cold-formed steel design Hailed by professionals around the world as the definitive text on the design of cold-formed steel, this book provides descriptions of the construction and structural behavior of cold-formed steel members and connections from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Updated to reflect the 2016 AISI North American specification and 2015 North American framing standards, this all-new fifth edition offers readers a better understanding of the analysis and design of the thin-walled, cold-formed steel structures that have been widely used in building construction and other areas in recent years. Cold-Formed Steel Design, 5th Edition has been revised and reorganized to incorporate the Direct Strength Method. It discusses the reasons and justification for the various design provisions of the North American specification and framing design standards. It provides chapter coverage of: the types of steels and their most important mechanical properties; the fundamentals of buckling modes; commonly used terms; the design of flexural members, compression members and closed cylindrical tubes, and of beam–columns using ASD, LRFD, and LSD methods; shear diaphragms and shell roof structures; standard corrugated sheets; and more. Updated to the 2016 North American (AISI S100) design specification and 2015 North American (AISI S240) design standard Offers thorough coverage of ASD, LRFD, LSD, and DSM design methods Integrates DSM in the main body of design provisions Features a new section on Power-Actuated Fastener (PAF) Connections Provides new examples and explanations of design provisions Cold-Formed Steel Design, 5th Edition is not only instructive for students, but can serve as a major source of reference for structural engineers, researchers, architects, and construction managers.
