Book Description
Excerpt from Assets of the Ideal City In the first place, in times of peace the governmental activities which most directly affect our prosperity and happiness are those of the community in which we live. What would life or property in any city be worth without the police and fire protection, the public schools, the street paving and lighting, the water-supply, sewer age system and other community activities? Book Description
Excerpt from A Dream of an Ideal City HE Ideal is the Real well seen - Carlyle. The dreams of yesterday are the realities of today - Carlyle. Visions are the creators and feeders of mankind - George Eliot. The accurate final rights of man lie in the far depths of the ideal. Carlyle. I dreamed in a dream how I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth. I dreamed that it was the new city OF friends; nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love; it led the rest; it was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city, and in all their looks and words - W'hitman. Human Society is progressive - progressive, let us hope, to a higher, a purer, a more unselfish ethical standard - Lord Russell. I say young men will see visions, and I hope men who are no longer young will see visions, because it is on the visions of the future that there is best hope for the politics of the present; and when you and I cease to dream dreams, it will be time for us to give up being municipal reformers. - Lord Rosebery. Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them; but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead - Louisa M. Alcott. Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Description
Excerpt from Our Home City The west is growing fast, and there is room for our new town, and an excellent chance for growth. Finer villages, towns, and cities than any on the map will yet be built in the United States. This does not mean larger. While still keeping close to practical enactments we may yet take the best from other cities in the way of good government. It is easier to build a new house than to remodel an old one; and 'better to start out living under good laws than to struggle for their introduction afterwards. There is plenty of unknown ability to design and build a model municipality. Engineers, architects, landscape men, electricians - all the wonder workers who have given us of their best in many fields can join in this city, and not only make a career for themselves, but a contribution to American progress. We do not need the old established men. They would charge us two dollars for doing the work, and three for their reputation. Those with a living to make, men and women in search of a new home, will be our chosen ones. One of the essential beliefs of a real democracy is that there is always plenty Of un discovered talent ready to do any kind of work about as well as those who are already famous. We have seer) many beautiful expositions since the best one at Chicago. There have been Buffalo, Omaha, St. Louis, Portland, Jamestown, Seattle, and soon there will be one at San Francisco; but their beauties have been only for a season. Our architects and engineers can design a miniature exposition that will be permanent, and that will ever grow better looking. By planning in advance each new feature can be added when the time comes, when the money is ready, when the people say, Yes. Book Description
Excerpt from The Challenge of the City On the one hand, the city stands for all that is evil - a city that is full of devils, foul and corrupting; and, on the other hand, the city stands for all that is noble, full of the glory of God, and shining with a clear and brilliant light. But, if we think a little more carefully, we shall see that the city has in all ages of the world represented both these aspects. It has been the worst, and it has been the best. Every city has been a Babylon, and every city has been a New Jerusalem; and it has always been a question whether the Babylon would extirpate the New Jerusalem or the New Jerusalem would extirpate the Babylon. It has been so in the past. It is so in the present. The greatest corruption, the greatest vice, the greatest crime, are to be found in the great city. The greatest philanthropy, the greatest purity, the most aggressive and noble courage, are to be found in the great city. San Francisco, St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Brooklyn are full of devils - and also full of the glory of God. - Lyman Abbott.
