Le transport des hydrocarbures liquides et gazeux par canalisations dispose de nombreux atouts aux plans économique et environnemental. L'évolution de l'économie mondiale du pétrole et des industries afférentes nous a conduit à repenser et à enrichir ce sujet. Dans un contexte mondial marqué par l'insécurité énergétique, les pipelines et notamment les gazoducs sont devenus un vecteur géopolitique. Une large partie de cet ouvrage précise donc les éléments de géographie économique et les enjeux qui la soustendent. Dans les pays occidentaux, où les réseaux d'oléoducs sont aujourd'hui, pour la plupart, vieillissants et pour certains surdimensionnés, les préoccupations économiques se concentrent sur le renforcement de la prévention des risques et l'atteinte d'une sécurité maximale des installations. L'aspect environnemental - Kyoto aidant - est envisagé sous l'angle de la diminution de l'auto-consommation de ce mode de transport. La prévention des risques par l'utilisation de racleurs instrumentés et la réduction de la consommation énergétique du transport par l'apport d'additifs sont développées ici. Par ailleurs, les gazoducs profitent aujourd'hui d'un engouement qui leur faisait défaut jusqu'à présent. Malgré son transport coûteux, le gaz doit son succès à son empreinte environnementale plus discrète que celle du pétrole. Le coût élevé de son transport en comparaison de celui de l'hydrocarbure liquide nous a paru justifier une analyse détaillée dans cet ouvrage. Enfin, en dépit de la mort toujours annoncée du pétrole, les besoins des pays émergents, cumulés à ceux des pays occidentaux, progressent et le remplacement de réseaux " fatigués " (en particulier en Amérique du Nord et dans la Communauté des états indépendants) sera indispensable : le développement d'oléoducs et de gazoducs va donc perdurer et nécessiter des investissements colossaux. L'ouvrage se conclut donc sur l'étude technique et financière simplifiée d'un projet d'oléoduc.
