Going Ashore Made Easy
Author: American Sailing
Publisher: American Sailing
ISBN: 1733162844
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 100
Book Description
Any boater will tell you that sometimes getting ashore on a dinghy can be an adventure. Reading this book will help you stay safe and have fun as you use your dinghy to connect with land and other vessels. Going Ashore Made Easy is also appropriate for anyone entering the market for a new dinghy and outboard as a standalone vessel for recreation or transportation, or as a tender to a larger boat. It is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the topic; in fact, it may be the only book to help a prospective buyer negotiate the variety of choices available. This book will help novice and seasoned dinghy operators to safely rig, operate, transport and maintain their investment, and to employ the craft for a wide variety of useful and purely fun activities – perhaps more than you ever imagined. Given the breadth of information on outboard motors, this book is valuable to any mariner who uses an outboard motor to propel their sailboat or powerboat.

Armed Bluejackets Ashore
Author: Nelson H. Lawry
Publisher: Fonthill Media
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 614
Book Description
Among other major navies, that of the United States put armed naval landing parties ashore during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although done primarily to protect American interests, they also safeguarded international communities against the "savage hordes" of "uncivilized" nations. Specially designed light field guns carried aboard gunboats and larger warships sometimes supported the bluejackets and marines, customarily when larger parties more likely to face sharp actions went ashore. Most American naval landings of the nineteenth century took place in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, whereas the following century saw landings against larger and otherwise civilized nations such as Mexico and Russia. The last of these landings were made in conjunction with the Allied assaults on North Africa in November 1942. The first purpose-built landing guns, the bronze Dahlgren muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers, saw extensive deployment during the Civil War, and postwar in Korea. The US Navy's very first steel breechloading guns were landing pieces. Five different marks of 3-inch breechloading guns and several guns of other calibers followed in successive decades, serving for varying periods. The history and characteristics of these landing guns are chronicled.

Going Ashore
Author: Mavis Gallant
Publisher: Emblem Editions
ISBN: 155199366X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
One of the world’s great short story writers emerges with a selection of stories from her past, a trove of hidden treasures. Mavis Gallant moved from Montreal to Paris in 1950 to write short stories for a living. Since then she has continued to write, producing a remarkable body of work. In 1993, Robertson Davies said, “She has written many short stories. My calculation suggests that she has written in this form at least the equivalent of twenty novels.” Many of her stories have been anthologized, notably in the 1996 classic Selected Stories, from which hundreds of pages had to be cut for reasons of length. These “embarrassment of riches” are restored in this collection, along with many other neglected treasures from her past. Arranged in the order in which they appeared, they shed light on people living through most of the second half of the twentieth century. More important, they show one of the greatest short story writers of our time at work, delineating a series of worlds with dramatic flair, dazzlingly precise language, a wicked wit, and a vivid understanding of the human condition.
