ISBN: 1532023006
Category : History

Pages : 775
Book Description
The letters are worn thin from rereading and sharing with family and friends, and age has discolored them. As you read the letters, you will relive the war experience in the details of the Rawert familys everyday lives, love, worry, concern, faith, pride, and neighborhood news of a typical American family during the war. The correspondence between the Rawert family of Schnitzelburg in Louisville, Kentucky, and their son, who served in the US Army far from home and at the European front shortly after D-day, convey the high price that the troops and their families paid during wartime from 19421944. The letters reveal such detail as Im writing this letter from the hole I sleep in. PFC Norbert Rawert, HQ 59th Signal Battalion wrote this on July 3, 1944, from somewhere in France. He continues, Its about six feet long and about 2 feet deep. Its not the most comfortable place in the world but it might be one way to keep from getting a Purple Heart. Its pretty cozy though. I got my bed roll on the bottom and my tent over the top. The only thing is, I dont know who is going to give it up, me or this ground mole. He sticks his ass out and I gave him a boot and he crawls back into his own hole. Ha. Then in about an hour hes digging back out again. This book is an ideal choice for those who want to know more about daily life in the 1940s on and off the battlefield during WWII.

ISBN: 0821804154
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 429
Book Description
This book contains lectures presented at the MIT symposium on the 100th anniversary of Norbert Wiener's birth held in October 1994. The topics reflect Wiener's main interests while emphasizing current developments. In addition to lectures dealing directly with problems on which Wiener worked, such as potential theory, harmonic analysis, Wiener-Hopf theory, and Paley-Wiener theory, the book discusses the following topics: BLFourier integral operators with complex phase (a contemporary successor to the Paley-Wiener theory) BLstatistical aspects of quantum mechanics and of liquid crystals BLfinancial markets, including the new trading strategies for options based on Wiener processes BLstatistical methods of genetic research BLmodels of the nervous system, pattern recognition, and the nature of intelligence The volume includes reviews on Norbert Wiener's contributions from historical and current perspectives. The Anthem Companion to Norbert Elias
Author: Stephen Mennell
Publisher: Anthem Press
ISBN: 1839986662
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
The book presents an authoritative assessment of Norbert Elias (1897–1990). It recognizes Elias as one of the major contributors to the development of sociological tradition in the past century and charts the continuing relevance of his conception of sociology for contemporary society. Only toward the end of his career as an academic did Elias’s work begin to attract the attention of English-speaking sociologists, historians, and scholars of cultural studies. The book provides an authoritative and broad representation of Elias’s oeuvre and work inspired by it. While Elias is best known for his major study of The Civilizing Process, the reach and subtle depths of Elias’s conception of process sociology has been cemented more recently by the English-language publication of Elias’s collected work of 18 volumes. The baton of process sociology is being passed on to further generations of sociologists. Chapters from leading contributors outline the nature of the sociological practice of Elias and address fundamental questions of historical sociology, democratization, gender, racialization processes, and embodiment. Later chapters highlight the contribution of process sociology for understanding developments in nation, state and global sociology, criminology, art, and education.

Norbert Wiener#A Life in Cybernetics
Author: Norbert Wiener
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262347067
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 527
Book Description
Norbert Wiener's celebrated autobiography, available for the first time in one volume. Norbert Wiener—A Life in Cybernetics combines for the first time the two volumes of Norbert Wiener's celebrated autobiography. Published at the height of public enthusiasm for cybernetics—when it was taken up by scientists, engineers, science fiction writers, artists, and musicians—Ex-Prodigy (1953) and I Am a Mathematician (1956) received attention from both scholarly and mainstream publications, garnering reviews and publicity in outlets that ranged from the New York Times and New York Post to the Virginia Quarterly Review. Norbert Wiener was a mathematician with extraordinarily broad interests. The son of a Harvard professor of Slavic languages, Wiener was reading Dante and Darwin at seven, graduated from Tufts at fourteen, and received a PhD from Harvard at eighteen. He joined MIT's Department of Mathematics in 1919, where he remained until his death in 1964 at sixty-nine. In Ex-Prodigy, Wiener offers an emotionally raw account of being raised as a child prodigy by an overbearing father. In I Am a Mathematician, Wiener describes his research at MIT and how he established the foundations for the multidisciplinary field of cybernetics and the theory of feedback systems. This volume makes available the essence of Wiener's life and thought to a new generation of readers.

Norbert Elias and Human Interdependencies
Author: Thomas Salumets
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773569286
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
While the opposing paradigms of globalization and fragmentation compete in often bloody and destructive ways in the world today, this book convincingly reminds us of the importance of finding out more about the complex and changing ways in which we are connected. The authors demonstrate that the more we understand our connectedness and deal with its consequences, the less dependent and helpless we become. The critical, multidisciplinary perspectives they offer cover a wide range of subjects, from the world wide web to medieval poetry, nations and gender, cancer narratives and money, emotion management and the financial markets, and the American civilizing process and the repression of shame. The contributions bear witness to Elias's innovative achievements while the authors continue his stunning explorations, extending them into other areas of the humanities and the sciences, and presenting their own wide-ranging and penetrating insights into our mutual dependence. Contributors are Jorge Arditi (SUNY-Buffalo), Godfried Van Benthem Van Den Bergh (emeritus, Erasmus University, Rotterdam), Reinhard Blomert (Humboldt University, Germany and Karl-Franzens University, Austria), Stephen Guy-Bray (University of Calgary), Thomas M. Kemple (University of British Columbia), Hermann Korte (emeritus, University of Hamburg, Germany), Helmut Kuzmics (University of Graz, Austria), Stephen Mennell (National University of Ireland), Thomas Salumets, Thomas J. Scheff (emeritus, University of California in Santa Barbara), Ulrich C. Teucher (University of British Columbia), Annette Treibel (Pedagogical University of Karlsruhe), and Cas Wouters (Utrecht University, Netherlands).
