Artaud has been mythologized by influential post-structuralist critics as an icon of failure and madness, overlooking the self-mythologizing which permeates his vast oeuvre. This book uses 'heresy' rather than 'madness' to designate the impassioned thought processes which escape the terms oforthodox Western epistemology, and situates Artaud, as the most extravagant of heretics, in company with the Gnostics whose speculations served to define heresy in the beginnings of the Christian tradition.
