Many served as elegant New Year greeting, and these prints combine embossing, gauffrage, hand-rubbed metallic pigments and materials such as lacquer and mother-of-pearl. Most surimono were commissioned by poetry clubs and are inscribed in calligraphy with whimsical or humorous poems composed by the club members. The Frank Lloyd Wright collection of surimono was recently discovered in the vaults of Taliesen West, and this book, in conjunction with a touring exhibition of Wright's surimono, presents the prints. It contains a catalogue of the prints in the collection, an essay on poetry found on the surimono and an index of poets.

This profusely illustrated volume presents groundbreaking scholarship on the Ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and his immediate artistic and literary circles. Achieving worldwide renown for his dramatic landscape print series, such as the "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji," Hokusai also excelled in book illustrations, erotica, and privately commissioned woodcuts called "surimono." Aspects of the artist's innovative and novel approach to the graphic arts are discussed in the first half of this volume. Less well known, Hokusai was a highly accomplished painter who oversaw a studio of several close pupils, including his daughter Ti, who often worked in a style closely resembling his own. The study of Hokusai's corpus of paintings thus raises many complex issues of authorship, dating and authenticity -- further complicated by the abundant production of forgeries both during and after his lifetime. The Japanese landscape print has had a tremendous influence on Western art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Japan and in the West it is often seen as the dominant form in Ukiyo-e, pictures from the floating world. And yet for all its importance, it is a genre whose history has never been written. Beyond The Great Wave is a survey or overview for all those interested in discovering the inner dynamics of one of art history's most remarkable achievements. However, it is also a quest narrative, in which landscapes and notions of Japan as a homeland are intertwined and interconnected. Although there has never been a book-length study of the Japanese landscape print in either Japanese or English, a great deal has been written about the two giants of the genre, Hokusai and Hiroshige. From what traditions did these two nineteenth-century artists emerge? Who were their predecessors? What influence, if any, did they have on other Ukiyo-e artists? Can their influence be seen in the shin-hanga and sôsaku-hanga artists of the twentieth century?
