Book Description
Mr. and Mrs. Summers have been killed in a car crash, leaving a young daughter of five, Toni. She is placed in a convent until she is seventeen. Toni, leading a naïve and innocent life in the convent meets up with Alison, who shows her a seedy side of life, involving drugs and homosexual relationships . . . Toni embraces this hedonistic lifestyle. In her first year at the college in Birmingham she discovers a lump on her breast and is referred to Aston Hospital where she first encounters a consultant, Mr. Theo Xavier. He has a great bearing on Toni's future. After her successful exam results she decides to go to London for the weekend. Whilst driving under the influence of drugs and with a borrowed license she has a terrible accident and her passenger is fatally injured. Toni is left paralysed and permanently in a wheelchair. She is on the verge of suicide, not because of her injuries but the loss of her lover. To add to her problems Toni has to have a serious operation not connected with her spinal injury but something almost as critical. Mr. Xavier is the surgeon, Susannah his wife. Susannah befriends Toni and she reluctantly (reluctantly because she wasn't used to family life and how to deal with it) becomes one of the family. Susannah is not the wonderful hostess she purports to be and causes an enormous amount of trauma. Over this time Toni is sexually abused by Susannah, and also suffers a severe a beating at the hands of Theo. She is humiliated by both. The tale takes a twist, when, after some years during which Toni and the surgeon lose contact he appears on the scene causing an inconceivable and volatile change in her life. Another consultant that Toni works with on research offers her support during this turmoil. Toni is very grateful to him and it's apparent that he is besotted with her, although the feeling isn't reciprocated. Toni, despite not having any maternal feelings becomes a mother to twin boys. During this time, due to her strong nature pulls through to continue her further academic studies and is awarded her doctorate. A life changing event occurs due to Theo's reappearance and Toni life becomes chaotic and tumultuous, but worse if yet to come

Still Learning to Read
Author: Franki Sibberson
Publisher: Stenhouse Publishers
ISBN: 1625310269
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 250
Book Description
Foreword by Colby Sharp In the decade since the first edition of Still Learning to Read was published, the prevalence of testing and the Common Core State Standards have changed what is expected of both teachers and students. The new edition of Still Learning to Read focuses on the needs of students in grades 3-6 in all aspects of reading workshop, including reading workshop, read-aloud, classroom design, digital tools, fiction, nonfiction, and close reading. The book stays true to its original beliefs of slowing down and knowing our readers, but it also takes into account the sense of urgency that changing times and standards impose on classrooms. This edition examines current trends in literacy, includes a new section on intentional instructional planning, and provides expanded examples of mini-lessons and routines that promote deeper thinking about learning. It also includes a brand new chapter on scaffolding for reading nonfiction and showcases the authors' latest thinking on close reading and text complexity. Online videos provide glimpses into classrooms as students make book choices, work in small groups, and discuss their reading notebooks. Expanded and updated book lists, recommendations for digital tools, lesson cycles, and sections specifically written for school leaders round out this foundational resource.
