Book Description
Tactical Terrain Data (TTD) is comprised of data set similar in content, accuracy and resolution to a Class B, 1:50,000 scale topographic map, a 1:50,000 Tactical Terrain Analysis Data Base, and a Marine Combat Chart. TTD will contain unsynthesized and unsymbolized feature and attribute data plus elevation data. Feature and attribute data will include information about the size, shape, location and height of extracted features. The elevation matrix will contain elevation posts every 30 meters referenced to the World Geodetic System. TTD is considered the Army's operational support data base and will meet most user requirements. Special Terrain Data (STD) is comprised of elevation and feature data sets similar to TTD, but is much more detailed and accurate, being roughly equivalent to a 1:12,500 scale topographic map. The Defense Mapping Agency has recognized Army's need for the TTD product, but indicated that STD would be difficult to produce using current and planned production systems at DMA. Higher resolution STD is still required, but new DMA production solutions are needed. Some possibilities at least on an interim basis, include having an Army user employ TTD as a base to establish geometry, best-fit it to higher resolution source material such as the new generations of multispectral imagery, and extract more dense feature data as required.

Book Description
This report identifies the Army's requirements for terrain analysis, the Analysis Community, and for known and anticipated Army Systems and Programs. This volume is a set of specifications which incorporate the requirements determined as a result of this study. The intent of this volume is to provide to the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) a single, consolidated, set of specifications that will accommodate the majority of known and anticipated Army requirements. A brief explanation and rationale is provided for each data element required. These specifications provide the vehicle from which DMA and the Army can work toward a final production specification that is both producible by DMA and is capable of supporting Army requirements. Originator keywords: Digital topographic data (DTD), Data base evaluation, Terrain analysis, Army analysis community, Tactical systems, Terrain elevation data; Feature data, Simulation, Training, Test and development, Data content, Data accuracy, Data resolution.

Book Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has, historically, been the focal point within the Army for topographic surveying and mapping. The U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories (US'ETL), a USACE research and development laboratory, has spearheaded research and development in the mapping sciences, developing automated mapping and surveying systems and supporting development of tactical system that process digital topographic data (DTD). USAETL has long been an active participant within the mapping community for fostering.
