Book Description
Focusing on the day-to-day operations of the U.S. armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, from 1798 to 1861, this book shows what the "new technology" of mechanized production meant in terms of organization, management, and worker morale. A local study of much more than local significance, it highlights the major problems of technical innovation and social adaptation in antebellum America. Merritt Roe Smith describes how positions of authority at the armory were tied to a larger network of political and economic influence in the community; how these relationships, in turn, affected managerial behavior; and how local social conditions reinforced the reactions of decision makers. He also demonstrates how craft traditions and variant attitudes toward work vis-à-vis New England created an atmosphere in which the machine was held suspect and inventive activity was hampered.Of central importance is the author's analysis of the drastic differences between Harpers Ferry and its counterpart, the national armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, which played a pivotal role in the emergence of the new technology. The flow of technical information between the two armories, he shows, moved in one direction only— north to south. "In the end," Smith concludes, "the stamina of local culture is paramount in explaining why the Harpers Ferry armory never really flourished as a center of technological innovation."Pointing up the complexities of industrial change, this account of the Harpers Ferry experience challenges the commonly held view that Americans have always been eagerly receptive to new technological advances.

Book Description
The archeological investigation of the Armory Street within the Lower Armory Grounds provides us with a broader view of both the Native American and early Armory occupation periods and yields further data to better understand the early history and prehistory of Harpers Ferry. A number of interesting artifacts were collected during the course of the excavations. Some interesting items included a cache of 75-100 three-piece, long- range rear sights for the U.S. Model 1855 rifle in a small deposit at the corner of the warehouse. China plates commissioned by the railroad to commemorate the funding of the B&O Railroad were also discovered, plus several items from the Civil War era were found. Book Description
Thai Tea Armory Reborn! May you all always be healthy, happy and enthusiastic. On October 5, 2023, our Indonesian National Army (TNI) will be exactly 78 years old. Times have changed a lot, the geopolitical constellation has changed, the strategic environment has changed. So, the threats and challenges faced by the TNI have also changed. In this regard, all Armory Reborn editors wish the TNI a happy birthday. Hopefully the TNI can continue to develop, become more advanced and able to overcome all these challenges. In relation to changes in geopolitics and the strategic environment, the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, has an important meaning. India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is considered successful in taking advantage of the G20 Summit moment to raise India’s image as a voice for the interests of developing countries, which are usually called the Global South. As was the case at last year’s G20 Summit in Bali, Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia, was not present in person at the big event of the New Delhi G20 Summit. Russia is being targeted by the United States and its allies because of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, which led to a protracted war on mainland Europe. This war drastically reduced Russia’s weapons reserves. So, Putin’s meeting with North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un has attracted the attention of observers. Russia and North Korea are both being ostracized by the West. It is not surprising that Putin and Kim Jong-un help each other, including with arms and military technology transactions. For those of you who are interested in defense technology, we provide an article about submarine crew rescue vehicles. The Indonesian Navy had a bitter and sad experience with the sinking of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine two years ago in the Bali Strait. At that time, the entire crew of the submarine died. In 2021, Indonesia did not have adequate equipment to carry out emergency rescue operations for submarine crews. So now Indonesia will buy a sophisticated submarine rescue vehicle made by U.K. We hope that Armory Reborn friends can enjoy all these articles. Satrio Arismunandar Editor in chief
