Book Description
During the late 1920s, brothers and Arizona businessmen Charles and Warren McArthur had a dream fostered by their growing success in providing elegant "Wonderbus" touring and camping services for the booming number of tourists to the Sonoran Desert. To realize their vision of a luxury resort hotel in the remote desert and mountains outside Phoenix, the pair enlisted a third brother, Albert Chase McArthur--architect and Frank Lloyd Wright protégé. In 1929, Albert, with the counsel of Wright, set about designing and constructing an architectural masterpiece. After the unprecedented short construction schedule of only six months, the Arizona Biltmore Hotel opened to rave reviews, was anointed with the title "Jewel of the Desert," and immediately achieved status as an "American architectural treasure." Initial ownership association with chewing gum magnate and baseball owner Charles Wrigley enhanced Arizona Biltmore's allure with the celebrities, sports figures, the wealthy, and the "glitteria" of the day. Through the ensuing decades the posh resort in the desert continued to attract the "Who's Who" of American society, film, and political circles, including such luminaries as Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, Irving Berlin, President and Jackie Kennedy, Nancy and Ronald[also "President," or was this before?] Reagan, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Marilyn Monroe, and an endless register of notables seeking the tranquil setting, fine cuisine, and social swirl of the Arizona Biltmore. Today, the Waldorf Astoria group of luxury resort hotels continues to steward the historic legacy of the McArthurs' dream and provide an unprecedented luxury experience, gourmet fine dining, and outdoor activities in a bucolic and tropical garden oasis. ARIZONA BILTMORE: Jewel of the Desert is a portrait of the legacy and continuing colorful story of Arizona Biltmore and the succession of events that have contributed to the legend.

Book Description
The evolution of an arid desert area into the verdant oasis that is the Wigwam Resort was ultimately brought about by an unlikely crop needed by an important American corporation in the early 20th century. The crop was long-staple cotton and the corporation was the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. When the U.S. Department of Agriculture discovered that Arizona's Salt River Valley was an ideal location to domestically grow long-staple cotton, Goodyear purchased 16,000 acres in the desert west of Phoenix to cultivate the crop for their newly developed pneumatic tire. The company built a three-room lodge, originally called the "Organization House," for the executives that came to oversee the farming operations. The location became a popular winter retreat within the company, and in 1929, Goodyear expanded the facilities and opened "The Wigwam" as a hotel. As the years progressed, amenities such as golf and fine dining were added, and the Wigwam Resort became one of the premier luxury destinations in the Southwest.

Book Description
Oakland is in the middle of a renaissance and, in the past five years, has quickly become a melting pot for hipsters, techies and aspiring artists escaping the San Francisco fog. But at its heart is the families that have called this city home for decades, giving it a rare sense of community that’s dying in other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. This can be experienced first-hand every month at Oakland First Fridays, where local bands and artists converge to put on the ultimate block party. Or the Grand Lake Farmer’s Market every Saturday provides another canvas for cultural and ethnic diversity. It only takes about 10 minutes at one of these city-wide events to see how Oakland, the birthplace of the Black Panther Party and other social justice organizations, is the definition of civic pride, welcoming any and all who visit to feel at home.

Book Description
The first edition of Marilee Adams's book introduced a surprising, life-altering truth: any of us can literally change our lives simply by changing the questions we ask, especially those we ask ourselves. We can ask questions that open us to learning, connection, satisfaction, and success. Or we can ask questions that impede progress and keep us from getting results we want. Asking ''What great things could happen today?'' creates very different expectations, moods, and energy than asking ''What could go wrong today?'' Many readers reported that they found themselves asking better questions before they even finished reading the book! This is the key insight that the book's hero, Ben Knight, learns from his executive coach as the story of his transformative journey unfolds, eventually leading to breakthroughs that save his career as well as his marriage. His success rests on having become a ''question man'' and an inquiring leader rather than a judgmental, know-it-all answer man.In this extensively revised second edition, Adams has made the story even more illuminating and helpful, adding three new chapters as well as three powerful new tools. Change Your Questions, Change Your Life is practical yet simple, giving readers an entertaining, step-by-step guide to a technique that will transform their personal and professional lives. Great results really do begin with great questions - Marilee Adams shows you how to ask them!
