Both disks were now white, but the retinal vessels were normal as to number and size. There were some capillaries on the disk surfaces. On December 3d the fields had contracted to less than 10 in both eyes, but he could still distinguish single letters of No. 18 at 5 m. Color perception within this limit was good. He disappeared and has not been seen since. Case XI. Retrobulbar Neuritis, Atrophy. Lateral Diplopia, Cured. James Eastman, a negro of thirty, was taken with la grippe on November 30, 1891. The attack was rather severe. About Christmas-time he noticed trouble with his eyes, preceded by some pain in the back of the head. There was lateral diplopia and dimness of vision. The diplopia ceased to be noticeable in March, but the failure in vision continued to increase until, at the time of examination (June 10, 1892), there was barely perception of light. The pupils are of medium size and respond feebly to light. Movements of the eye and lids good; media clear. The disks are white and rather dirty-looking; outlines not very sharp. Retinal arteries much narrowed in calibre; veins about normal in size and not tortuous. There is quite a noticeable white streak along each side of all the large vessels, which extends even on to the surface of the disk. In the right eye some small white dots and oblong patches are seen to the lower and outer side of the disk, mostly along or in the vicinity of the blood-vessels. The patients general health is, and has always been, good, and there are no signs of ataxia. Case XII. Atrophy Of Both Optic Nerves Following La Grippe. Smith Jackson, colored, age twenty-eight, had influenza in February, 1891. A month afterwards he noticed that vision was failing, and the failure has been gradually increasing until now (four months after the first symptoms were noticed) he counts fingers at three feet with either eye. The visual fields are much contracted concentrically. The disks are white, with good sharp outlines, and the retinal vessels are but little, if any, changed. The tendon reflex is good. Excerpt from Archives of Ophthalmology, 1907, Vol. 36: Edited in English and German Mrs. R. E. D., aged sixty-three, was first seen by Dr. Green wood February 19, 1906. Patient stated that sight of left eye had been blurred for a week. No pain at any time. Examination: left eye, light perception only, pupil normal, tension normal. Fundus shows hemorrhages everywhere, veins much dilated, dark and tortuous, arteries small, outline of disk obscured. Retina very hazy. Diagnosis: thrombosis central retinal vein. Right eye, vision normal, fundus normal, with the exception of a questionable thickening of the walls of some of the retinal vessels. General health good. Physical examination negative, heart normal and no evidences of general arterio-sclerosis. Urine examination negative for albumin and sugar. Thirteen days later the left eye became very painful, and an unbearable neuralgia involved the left side of head. When seen on the following day the left eye was found congested and stony-hard, the pupil dilated and showing a grayish-green reflex, the cornea steamy, and the anterior chamber almost obliterated. No perception of light. Under ether, iridectomy was attempted, but only a small section of the iris could be removed. This only partly relieved the pain and slightly reduced the tension. Owing to the severe pain, enucleation was performed March 10. 1906, twenty-six days after the onset of dimness of vision and six days after the onset of glaucoma. Excerpt from Archives of Ophthalmology, Vol. 38 During the course of a comparative study of the ocular reactions of the insane, the writers took occasion to secure photographic records of the eye movements in a case of congenital nystagmus. The patient was a paranoid dement who was committed to the Asylum as a result of some breach of the peace. The records were taken only a few days before his release, when the patient showed considerable improvement. In view of the condition of the patient at the time of examination, and in view of the absence of any especial optical stigmata of mental derangement, we assume that the records give a graphic representation of the involuntary eye movements in a case of congenital, binocular, lateral nystagmus, without serious complication from the residua of mental disease. Excerpt from Archives of Ophthalmology, Vol. 47: Founded in 1869 The ocular localizations of acne rosacea have been studied with great interest in late years. Although its existence was pointed out by Arlt in 1864 and afterwards described by Fuchs and Vossius, the characteristic signs of the disease were only definitely stated by Capauner (1), Kuntz (2), Wicherckiewicz (3), Schirmer (4), Blancke (5), Sydney Stephenson (6), and later by Erdmann (7), Holloway (8), Caralt (9), and others (10). Erdmann proposed the names of Rosacea Keratitis and Rosacea Conjunctivitis, which have been adopted, and accordingly this disease is so described in modem text-books and monographs, but these names in our opinion are limited and must be substituted by the more comprehensive term of Rosacea Ocularis. Although numerous cases of this disease have been published in recent years, the clinical aspects of the varied manifestations of rosacea of the eye have not yet been described, nor its etiology and pathogenesis entirely proved.
