Book Description
Excerpt from The Archery There are Grradgrinds of both sexes who may say that "my boys get enough exercise in doing the chores all the year, and as soon as spring opens they can get it behind the plow and harrow, or, later, in the hay and harvest fields; they are tired enough with the exercise of their work." As to the girls, it maybe said: "The daily routine of the house the sweeping and dusting, the table setting, and the dish-washing, give a plenty of exercise;but if they need any more they can help on washing days, and find a use for all their strength." - We would not say that the ideas implied in these answers are the rule, but that it is far too generally the case that mere work is looked upon as exercise, and that it will at all answer for or accomplish the purpose of exercise as recreation. For exercise to be beneficial it must not only be of a kind unlike the usual daily occupation, but it must have the cooperation of the mind. Mere muscular movement, that is not work, but made solely for exercise, without engaging the mind also, is of very little use. Many years ago the writer lived in the city, and in that portion of it where there were numerous (and very high-priced) schools for young ladies. In these schools a part of the regular programme was the morning and afternoon walk. These girls went out in pairs, the youngest in front and marphalled by two or more teachers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Archery In writing his book, Mr. Ford committed to paper the principles by means of which he secured his unrivalled posi tion as an archer. After displaying a clever trick, it is the practice of some conjurers to pretend to take the spectators into their confidence, and to show them how it is done.' In such cases the audience, as a rule, is not much the wiser; but a more satisfactory result has followed from Mr. Ford's instructions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Archery We learn from the first book of the Bible that the bow has been in use since the beginning of the world, for in it we are told that Lamech slew beasts with it. Further on, David took a sign from it from Jonathan, as appears in the first book of Kings. Again, as appears from his history, Hercules, the most mighty archer of his time, killed with it, while he was crossing the river, the giant who had robbed him of his wife. Also it was used by the archers who lived in the time of the Trojans. Similarly the book called The Art of War, says that the ancients taught their children to shoot with the bow, hold it in the left hand, and draw it with the right, of which more hereafter.
