Frederick was taught his alphabet by the wife of one of his owners, a knowledge he passed on to other slaves. In 1838, he successfully escaped slavery by jumping on a north-bound train. After less than 24 hours, he was in New York and free. The same year, he married the woman that had inspired his run for freedom and started working actively as a social reformer, orator, statesman, and women’s rights defender. He remains most known today for his 1845 autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave."

"The Loudoun Heights Cultural Resources Inventory documented the remains of historic sites on Loudoun Heights, the northern-most extension of the Blue Ridge located in Loudoun County, Virginia, and Jefferson County, West Virginia. This wooded and steep-sloped tract overlooks the town of Harpers Ferry from the south bank of the Shenandoah River, with 482 acres lying within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and 378 acres within the boundary of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. This project involved both archeological and historical research. Archeological fieldwork commenced in March 1988, and concluded in November 1988. Research revealed the cultural history of Loudoun Heights divided into three periods, characterized by industrial, military, and domestic uses. ... The archeological survey delineated eight Civil War campground areas. These campgrounds, likely occupied in 1862 by Federal troops for a total of five weeks, represent some of the best preserved Civil War encampments within the National Park System. This survey also documented six nineteenth-century domestic sites, which included a hotel complex and a substantial mountain spring developed by a brewery and bottling works in lower town Harpers Ferry."--Abstract, page xi.

"Manassas National Battlefield Park's General Management Plan (1983) named the Wheeler Tract as the site for the relocation of the picnic area and its attendant facilities. The area chosen for this relocation had been previously identified as the site of the late eighteenth- to early nineteenth-century complex known as "Portici." An archeological study of the proposed relocation area was required pursuant to planning and development. ... Nineteenth-century Portici evolved from a small tenant-occupied farmstead established during the eighteenth century. This tenant farm grew into a middling tobacco plantation called "Pohoke." Later the eighteenth-century dwelling was abandoned when Portici mansion house was constructed in circa 1820. Portici plantation became a flourishing, middling, multiple-grain-based plantation by the eve of the American Civil War. ... Archeological and archival work was conducted to document and assess the eligibility of Pohoke, Portici, and the Lewis house for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Collectively these three sites, with all their ancillary sites on the Wheeler tract, graphically depict the evolution of local lifeways and patterns of development in a frontier Piedmont plantation."--Abstract, page vii.
