Book Description
From January 16-24, 2001, archaeologists from Panamerican Consultants, Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee conducted an intensive remote-sensing refinement survey and diver investigations of three magnetic anomalies and six sidescan targets located within Pascagoula Harbor, Jackson County, Mississippi. The purpose of the survey was to determine if any of the anomalies represent potentially significant submerged cultural resources eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and which subsequently might require additional investigations. Performed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District under subcontract to the Louis Berger Group, Inc., the survey relocated and identified eight of the nine anomalies. All eight anomalies were identified as modern debris; the remaining target was absent at its coordinates perhaps owing to environmental conditions or shrimp trawling activity. The eight targets are not considered significant submerged cultural resources. Therefore, any subsequent activities concerning the proposed dredging activities of Pascagoula Harbor will not impact any historically significant watercraft.
