Vertebrates and Invertebrates of European Cities: Selected Non-Avian Fauna is the first known account of the vertebrate and invertebrate fauna of several cities in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. It excludes birds, which are described in a companion volume. The book contains eleven chapters about nine cities distributed throughout Europe. The chapters start with the history of the cities, which is followed by a description of the abiotic features such as geology, climate, air and water quality and then a brief account of the habitats. The vertebrate chapters describe the fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals that are known to occur in each city together with their status and the habitats in which they occur, for example housing, industrial areas, parks, transport routes and rivers. The invertebrate chapters contain an account of the presence, status and habitats occupied by 6 - 8 of the major invertebrate groups including butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, crickets and grasshoppers, beetles, molluscs, spiders, mites and springtails. This volume has been written and edited to be accessible to a wide range of interests and expertise including academic biologists, urban ecologists, landscape architects, planners, urban designers, undergraduates, other students and people with a general interest in natural history (especially cities) – not only in Europe but throughout the world.

In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Climate changes, particularly warming trends, have been recorded around the globe. For many countries, these changes in climate have become evident through insect epidemics (e.g., Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic in Western Canada, bark beetle in secondary spruce forests in Central Europe), water shortages and intense forest fires in the Mediterranean countries (e.g., 2005 droughts in Spain), and unusual storm activities (e.g., the 2004 South-East Asia Tsunami). Cuando hablamos de monumentos naturales es inevitable pensar en los árboles, ya que se trata de los seres vivos más grandes y longevos que podemos encontrar y que han estado, por lo tanto, estrechamente vinculados a la historia de la humanidad desde el inicio de ésta. Como veremos más adelante, esta unión es muy fructífera y diversa ya que afecta a un sinfín de actividades del hombre: mitos, creencias, simbologías, fuente de alimentación, fuente de materiales para usos diversos, motivo de inspiración para artistas y de estudios para naturalistas, etc. El área mediterránea y, en concreto, la Península Ibérica, conforma una zona excepcional debido a la gran diversidad de especies arbóreas que prueban este territorio. Se trata de uno de los núcleos más importantes del planeta en este sentido, por detrás de los tópicos. Esto es posible gracias a que las condiciones geográficas y bioclimáticas propician una gran variedad de hábitats, lo que implica diferentes vegetaciones potenciales. Tanto es así que en la península se encuentra el mayor número de especies arbóreas autóctonas diferentes de Europa. Esta característica aún realza más, si cabe, la necesidad de realizar una política de protección adecuada. Dentro de esta riqueza natural, determinados árboles destacan por ser portadores de unos valores propios, intrínsecos, y que no encontramos en ningún otro ejemplar. Son los árboles monumentales o singulares, repartidos por toda la geografía y que escenifican perfectamente, en la mayoría de los casos, la fusión entre patrimonio natural y cultural. Son variadas las razonas por las que un árbol puede ser considerado como singular: poseer unas características morfológicas especiales, presentar un valor histórico, cultural, popular o religioso, tener su importancia científica, o importancia paisajística u ornamental. En la gran mayoría de casos, un mismo árbol reúne varios de los requisitos, si no todos, aunque no siempre es así. Nos encontramos, pues, ante un patrimonio valiosísimo, del que aún no hemos tomado del todo conciencia, y que debemos empezar a cuidar y proteger seriamente ya que se trata de figuras únicas, irremplazables, y a las que hay que sumar a su imponente presencia física un bagaje difícilmente cuantificable. Qué mejor que estos árboles a la hora de sensibilizar al público en general, y muy concretamente a los más jóvenes, acerca de la necesidad urgente de una correcta gestión y conservación de la naturaleza. Estaríamos de este modo cerrando el círculo y contribuyendo al mantenimiento de esa herencia común que nos pertenece a todos.
