The Italian nation-state has been defined by practices of mobility. Tourists have flowed in from the era of the Grand Tour to the present, and Italians flowed out in massive numbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Italians made up the largest voluntary emigration in recorded world history. In the spring of 2011 it was suggested to me that with the thousands of photos which had been taken by my artist wife, Laura Gurton, during our many trips to Italy, that I produce a program in my hometown on Woodstock Public Access Television. Having been to Italy twenty times in an equal number of years, with many stories of my experiences, and friends I have made over the years, it seemed logical that a large number of people would be interested in seeing our images and hearing about my recollections. I agreed to begin to put together a show for weekly broadcast on the local television station. After months of preparation interrupted by some serious physical illnesses, I began to host Alans Italy weekly at 5 PM on Friday evenings. That was the beginning of many adventures with broadcasting live on a station that was strictly maintained by volunteers, many of whom had a very substantial technical understanding of the workings of the studio. It was at first suggested to me that it would be impossible to produce a weekly show for very long, since there were a finite number of photos available to me. As it turned out the show became a multifaceted presentation of all things Italian with several guests to interview. The audience grew, and with my involvement with Youtube, blogs, and local continuing education programs, my reputation grew. Alans Italy: The Birth of a Television Show is the story of my quest to create, produce, write, perform, and maintain a weekly show. It is a very personal account of all the trials and tribulations that I experienced during the year and a half since the project began. Having had a career of forty one years in Mathematics Education, with no experience with television production the many challenges I have faced make for a fascinating true life story of how an idea suggested to me, out of the blue, on a spring day became a local sensation.

Despite its avowed commitment to liberalism and democracy internationally, the United States has frequently chosen to back repressive or authoritarian regimes in parts of the world. In this comprehensive examination of American support of right-wing dictatorships, David Schmitz challenges the contention that the democratic impulse has consistently motivated U.S. foreign policy. Compelled by a persistent concern for order and influenced by a paternalistic racism that characterized non-Western peoples as vulnerable to radical ideas, U.S. policymakers viewed authoritarian regimes as the only vehicles for maintaining political stability and encouraging economic growth in nations such as Nicaragua and Iran, Schmitz argues. Expediency overcame ideology, he says, and the United States gained useful--albeit brutal and corrupt--allies who supported American policies and provided a favorable atmosphere for U.S. trade. But such policy was not without its critics and did not remain static, Schmitz notes. Instead, its influence waxed and waned over the course of five decades, until the U.S. interventions in Vietnam marked its culmination.

Geotourism, as a form of sustainable geoheritage tourism, was defined and developed, from the early 1990s, to contextualize modern approaches to geoconservation and physical landscape management. However, its roots lie in the late seventeenth century and the emergence of the Grand Tour and its domestic equivalents in the eighteenth century. Its participants and numerous later travellers and tourists, including geologists and artists, purposefully explored wild landscapes as‘geotourists’. With the rise of mass tourism, Italy became increasingly accessible to Victorian women travellers not only as a locus of artistic culture but also as a site of political enquiry. Despite being outwardly denied a political voice in Britain, many female tourists were conspicuous in their commitment to the Italian campaign for national independence, or Risorgimento (1815–61). Revisiting Italy brings several previously unexamined travel accounts by women to light during a decisive period in this political campaign. Revealing the wider currency of the Risorgimento in British literature, Butler situates once-popular but now-marginalized writers: Clotilda Stisted, Janet Robertson, Mary Pasqualino, Selina Bunbury, Margaret Dunbar and Frances Minto Elliot alongside more prominent figures: the Shelley-Byron circle, the Brownings, Florence Nightingale and the Kemble sisters.
