In January 1950 young Harry Forth, his brother, and his father experience a sudden blizzard on a mesa outside Albuquerque, New Mexico that leaves a deep impression that will affect him for decades to comethe fear of being left behind, the danger of the blinding snowstorm, and the providence of their surprising rescue. Harry buys a transcontinental bus ticket to Montreal and sets out on a great adventure. He boards a ship with hundreds of other young Americans headed to host families in Europe. During his odyssey across the United States he talks with several interesting strangers. In discussions with them and with students onboard the ship he realizes he is on a much grander journey to see a more interesting world than he had ever imagined. Along the way he becomes more aware and sure of his feelings towards strangers and some of the young women he encounters in school and during his voyage to Europe. He anticipates that the summer will be a turning point in his life. This fictionalized autobiography tells the story of a young man setting out to meet challenges and opportunities that the world offers him in a way that will change him forever.

During the years preceding the composition of Tristan and Isolde, Wagner's aesthetics underwent a momentous turnaround, principally as a result of his discovery of Schopenhauer. Many of Schopenhauer's ideas, especially those regarding music's metaphysical significance, resonated with patterns of thought that had long been central to Wagner's aesthetics, and Wagner described the entry of Schopenhauer into his life as "a gift from heaven." Chafe argues that Wagner's Tristan and Isolde is a musical and dramatic exposition of metaphysical ideas inspired by Schopenhauer. The first part of the book covers the philosophical and literary underpinnings of the story, exploring Schopenhauer's metaphysics and Gottfried van Strassburg's Tristan poem. This study is extremely personal to me. Not only have I struggled with depression, I also bear scars in my heart from wounds I received in spiritual combat on the battlefields. There were days I fought valiantly and days I set weeping and did not fight at all. But I have learned that scars are evidence that you were wounded but that you also survived. I am still in the battle, and I hope that by the grace of God, I am wiser and much more strategic in my warfare against this particular attack that the enemy often thrives in. I still do not win every battle, but I am learning, and I have not given up. As you read these pages, my prayer for you is that you find strength and a God-given determination not to give up either. Victory is mine, saith the Lord, and you are not alone. Look up, my friend, and take heart. We are more than conquers in Christ and our redemption draweth nigh.
