Another Day in the Colony
Author: Chelsea Watego
Publisher: Univ. of Queensland Press
ISBN: 0702264873
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 127
Book Description
A ground-breaking work – and a call to arms – that exposes the ongoing colonial violence experienced by First Nations people. In this collection of deeply insightful and powerful essays, Chelsea Watego examines the ongoing and daily racism faced by First Nations peoples in so-called Australia. Rather than offer yet another account of 'the Aboriginal problem', she theorises a strategy for living in a society that has only ever imagined Indigenous peoples as destined to die out. Drawing on her own experiences and observations of the operations of the colony, she exposes the lies that settlers tell about Indigenous people. In refusing such stories, Chelsea narrates her own: fierce, personal, sometimes funny, sometimes anguished. She speaks not of fighting back but of standing her ground against colonialism in academia, in court and in the media. It's a stance that takes its toll on relationships, career prospects and even the body. Yet when told to have hope, Watego's response rings clear: Fuck hope. Be sovereign.

The Chinese Face in Australia
Author: Lucille Lok-Sun Ngan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461421314
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
The book explains how multi-generational Australian-born Chinese (ABC) negotiate the balance of two cultures. It explores both the philosophical and theoretical levels, focusing on deconstructing and re-evaluating the concept of ‘Chineseness.’ At a social and experiential level, it concentrates on how successive generations of early migrants experience, negotiate and express their Chinese identity. The diasporic literature has taken up the idea of hybrid identity construction largely in relation to first- and second-generation migrants and to the sojourner’s sense of roots in a diasporic setting somewhat lost in the debate over Chinese diasporas and identities are the experiences of long-term migrant communities. Their experiences are usually discussed in terms of the melting-pot concepts of assimilation and integration that assume ethnic identification decreases and eventually disappears over successive generations. Based on ethnography, fieldwork and participant observation on multi-generational Australian-born Chinese whose families have resided in Australia from three to six generations, this study reveals a contrasting picture of ethnic identification.

Political Theory and Australian Multiculturalism
Author: Geoffrey Brahm Levey
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 0857456296
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
Multiculturalism has been one of the dominant concerns in political theory over the last decade. To date, this inquiry has been mostly informed by, or applied to, the Canadian, American, and increasingly, the European contexts. This volume explores for the first time how the Australian experience both relates and contributes to political thought on multiculturalism. Focusing on whether a multicultural regime undermines political integration, social solidarity, and national identity, the authors draw on the Australian case to critically examine the challenges, possibilities, and limits of multiculturalism as a governing idea in liberal democracies. These essays by distinguished Australian scholars variously treat the relation between liberalism and diversity, democracy and diversity, culture and rights, and evaluate whether Australia's thirty-year experiment in liberal multiculturalism should be viewed as a successful model.

Tax Planning for International Mergers, Acquisitions, Joint Ventures and Restructurings
Author: Ansgar A. Simon
Publisher: Kluwer Law International B.V.
ISBN: 9403547138
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 2424
Book Description
This classic handbook has once again been updated from cover to cover, assuring its secure place as the preeminent tax practice guide for the conduct of international business transactions. The user-friendly structure has been maintained—first, a hands-on overview of certain key tax aspects of international transactions that have general application (including a chapter on special issues for transactions touching the European Union), followed by detailed country profiles that offer solutions designed to maximize effective tax planning and satisfy compliance obligations in twenty key global trading jurisdictions. The expert country-by-country contributors explain each jurisdiction’s approach to the critical areas of concern in transactional tax planning, addressing among other issues: entity classification; taxable transactions; tax-free transactions (both domestic and cross-border); loss and other tax attribute planning; intellectual property transactions; compensation arrangements; acquisition financing; joint ventures; transfer pricing; VAT; and tax treaty usage. Because it is crucial for management and counsel to develop a working knowledge of the salient aspects of the relevant law in a broad range of global jurisdictions, the work is of immeasurable value in assessing, strategizing, and implementing international transactions while also allowing quick jurisdictional comparison of key tax aspects. Addressing an important information gap in an area of widespread commercial concern, this incomparable resource will be welcomed by international tax counsel, corporate and financial services attorneys, and corporate planning and compliance professionals.
