Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the President and Directors to the Stockholders of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company The Winchester and Potomac Railroad Company are now engaged in erecting the southern abutment of the river viaduct, and in the graduation of their road through the town of Har per's Ferry. It is expected that the entire line, from Winchester to the river, will be in readiness for use during the present year; so that, in a short time, there will be an uninterrupted Railroad communication between Winchester and Baltimore, a distance of one hundred and twelve miles, on the most direct route to the cotton growing districts of Tennessee and the South West pointing towards the great Nashville and New Orleans Railroad, and aiming at very near the centre of the James River and Kenbawa improvements. The extension of the Railroad from Winchester to Staunton is all that is necessary to secure to Baltimore a large portion of the trade of the great valley and the vast region that lies beyond its western boundary. Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Report of the President and Directors to the Stockholders of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail-Road Company, 1843 Before passing from the accounts of the Main Stem, the board deem it proper to remind the stockholders that in the operations of the past year they have not only encountered the competition and impediments already adverted to, but have been exposed to the heavy charge incident to the em ployment of horse power in the introduction of passengers, as well as burthen, into the city. The amount of such charge, with the present travel, may be stated at from 12 to annually; It must of course increase in proportion to the augmentation ln the number of passengers, unless the present. System be abandoned, or the city authorities should think pro per to permit the introduction of the locomotives as is now permitted in some other cities, and partially in Baltimore, without injury or inconvenience. Excerpt from Fifth Annual Report of the President and Directors to the Stockholders of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company, 1831 IN accordance with the regulations of the Company, I now present my second annual report, detailing the proceedings of this department for the last twelve months, and embracing such operations as will claim attention within the next year. Every effort has been made to realize the expectations which were formed, and the assurances that were given, that the road would be opened for travelling both to the Point Of Rocks on the Potomac river, and to the city of Frederick within the year 1831; and notwithstanding the generally unfavorable state of the season during the last autumn and the unusual severity of the winter, the work has been prosecuted with such activity that fully as much has been accomplished as was expected; leaving no reason to doubt but that the road will be Opened to those places with a double set of tracks on the first and second divisions, and with a single set of tracks on the other portions, within the time anticipated. The details of the proceedings of the Company since the last report, will be stated under the following heads.
