Book Description
Excerpt from Annotated Checklist of the Marine Mammals of the Gulf of California Walker er al. (1986) studied 152 skulls from the eastern North Pacific (6 from Baja California waters north of N, 112 from southern California waters, 32 - 37 N, and 34 from north of 37 N), finding modal differences between animals from the extreme north ern (above 37 N) and extreme southern (below 32 N) portions of the area. Vidal (1991) documented the existence of osteological materials from eight specimens from western Baja California (norte) and 15 from western Baja California Sur (the southernmost from Isla Magdalena, about latitude N). These specimens have not been studied in detail. To date, no osteological materials have been collected in the Gulf. Book Description
Excerpt from The Marine Mammals of the North-Western Coast of North America: Described and Illustrated, Together With an Account of the American Whale-Fishery Being on the coast Of California in 1852, when the gold-fever raged, the force of circumstances compelled me to take command of a brig, bound on a seal ing, sea-elephant, and whaling voyage, or abandon sea-life, at least temporarily. The Objects Of our pursuit were found in great numbers, and the Opportunities for studying their habits were so good, that I became greatly interested in col leeting facts bearing upon the natural history of these animals. Reference to the few books devoted to the subject soon convinced me that I was at work in a department in which but little definite knowledge existed. This was true even of the whales, the best known Of this class; and I was soon led to believe that, by diligent Observation, I should be able to add materially to the scanty stock of infor mation existing in regard to the marine mammals of the Pacific Coast. I was the more encouraged to pursue these investigations, because, among the great number Of intelligent men in command Of Whaling-ships, there was no one who had contrib uted anything Of importance to the natural history of the Cetaceans; while it was Obvious that the opportunities Offered for the study Of their habits, to those prae tically engaged in the business Of whaling, were greater than could possibly be enjoyed by persons not thus employed. The chief Object in this work is to give as correct figures Of the different Species of marine mammals, found on the Pacific Coast of North America, as could be Obtained from a careful study of them from life, and numerous measurements after death, made whenever practicable. It is also my aim to give as full an account Of the habits Of these animals as practicable, together with such facts in reference to their geographical distribution as have come to my knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from A Distributional List of the Mammals of California The system of entry adopted in the following list is simple. Of the higher groups only Orders and Families are given. The scientific name here adopted for the species is given in bold face, followed by the authority. A vernacular name has been selected - in many cases with difficulty, as is admitted. In nearly every case the original description has been verified from its original source. In the few instances where the cita tion is given within quotation marks, the citation is at second hand, that is, the original has not been seen by the writer. The type locality is usually just as given in connection with the original description; sometimes it is modified somewhat to make it more intelligible, for example, by giving the name of the county or of the nearest large town; and occasionally cor rections have been necessary. The synonyms are any other names - aside from those appearing in the heading and in the citation following orig inal description - that have been applied to the species as occurring within the state of California. Where a name now considered synonymous with the accepted one, was based upon a specimen from California, the full citation and type locality are given. Book Description
This handy guide provides the information needed to identify all the species of marine mammals that occur along the California coast, and tells the best places to observe them. It also presents a compact survey of the remarkable adaptations that enable these astonishing creatures to survive in their ocean environment. The illustrations for this revised edition have been completely redone, taking advantage of new findings about the size and shape of flukes, dorsal fins, and other features in whales and dolphins, as well as shapes, sexual differences, and social behavior in seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Many of the marine mammals described in the book have made tremendous come-backs from near-extinction, notably the gray whales, elephant seals, and sea otters. They need strong protection if they are to be ensured of survival. This volume provides the basis for informed public understanding of these remarkable animals.
