Book Description
The first settlers to arrive here in 1869 purchased 160 acres for two dollars and change. La Jolla attracted artists, architects, writers and scientists over the years, contributing to today's prized reputation as a valuable world-class destination. Their stories shaped the fascinating history of this seaside village. Pirates and smugglers hid out in Sunny Jim's Cave. Ellen Browning Scripps, the Godmother of La Jolla, founded institutions and recreation areas for not only La Jollans but also the rest of the world, including the famous Children's Pool and Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Theodor Geisel derived inspiration for his art from La Jolla's landscapes and people. Native La Jollan Patricia Daly-Lipe recalls the stories of these and many other people and places that have molded the village of La Jolla into a natural and cultural wonder.

Book Description
Dictionary.com defines "advent" to be "a coming into place, view or being. What is advent here? It is an adult science fiction novel set in the somewhat near future in an alternate reality. It is the first book in a six part series. It starts with an ancient immortal soldier with the heart, mind, and body of a young adult who goes on a routine mission to squash some Space Pirate bugs. Unfortunately things do not go as planned. He and his squad are captured and are going to be experimented upon in a pirate bioweapons project. Fortunately for him, he manages to escape at the last second. Good, right? Wrong. It was too late for him. He's already been injected with a DNA changing virus. His internal medical nanites are losing the battle within him and he quickly looses all of his advanced equipment; basically everything that made him unique. What will happen to him? Alone on a strange world with no skills beyond his lax military background, he must find out what happened to his soldiers and find a way to get back with what little he's got. The alternative is to try to grow up and try to make a name for himself, or else he'll lose himself and never return. This is the beginning of a new arc. Zero is taken out of his comfort zone as the leader of the most powerful, yet questionably lax peacekeeping military power in the galaxy and is dumped into a new world, forced to adapt quickly while trying to hold onto his old principles. The only thing compelling him to live on is his current emergency objective, but how long would that really last? Under his stolid complexion, he is slowly losing purpose, losing all control to a demon... Until he finds someone worth fighting for, to bring him back anew—

Book Description
The 19th International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts was focused on the centennial of the initial publication of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds. Wells's first and fourth novels, The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, have together largely created the science fiction genre and are arguably the two most influential works of science fiction. But through his works Wells has had an even broader influence on the fantastic, and numerous writers, artists, and musicians are indebted to him. This volume includes selected essays from the 19th annual ICFA and gives special attention to Wells and his legacy. The first section of the book offers fresh interpretations of The War of the Worlds, particularly as a commentary on colonialism. The second provides broader coverage of Wells and his works, with essays examining his A Modern Utopia and looking at texts which his writings inspired in major or minor ways. The third includes essays on noted fantasy writer Peter Straub, the guest of honor at the conference; while the fourth presents discussions of a variety of topics related to the fantastic, including fantastic neomedievalism, Dracula, and dragons.
