An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology
Author: Amalananda Ghosh
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9789004092648
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 434
Book Description
"An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

Remains of Domestic Animals Discovered Among Post-Pleiocene Fossils in South Carolina
Author: F. S. Holmes
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330254325
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 22
Book Description
Excerpt from Remains of Domestic Animals Discovered Among Post-Pleiocene Fossils in South Carolina Under the above head you published, a short time since, a notice of the fossil remains discovered in the marl-beds of Ashley River, and included a short extract from a paper written by the distinguished anatomist, Professor Leidy of Philadelphia. Your notice seems to have attracted general attention, but I regret to find by the letter you kindly sent me, that one of your correspondents is afraid the article in question may cause some misapprehension of the views of Professor Liedy in regard to the origin of the recent or existing species of the horse in North America. I have read with care the letter of your Philadelphia correspondent, and for reasons that will hereafter appear, I must, beg permission to reply to it. Why should he infer from your article on the fossil remains of the horse, or from the extract from Professor Leidy's paper, that allusion was made to the recent horse? The opinion of Professor Leidy in regard to the origin of our domestic horse, is not alluded to; your remarks are confined to the fossil remains of this animal, and not a word is said about recent species, or those now in existence, The caption of the article must have excited the apprehension expressed by the writer, and as this heading may have been suggested by my note to you, inclosing the extract, I feel myself responsible for it.
