Book Description
A clinically relevant, reader -friendly text covering everything the anesthesia provider must know about physiologyThis well-illustrated new resource is the most concise and high-yield presentation of physiology topics available to the anesthesia provider. The authors (who are both educators and clinicians) deliver a complete overview of physiology, but, since this book is written for the anesthesia provider, the bulk of the text is dedicated to cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. Clinical Physiology in Anesthetic Practice distinguishes itself from general medical physiology books by the inclusion of case studies and clinical correlation boxed inserts that emphasize key fact that relate to real-world practice. •Numerous case studies demonstrate the clinical relevance of basic science•The author are experienced educators and clinicians, and know how to present difficult concepts in the most interesting and reader-friendly manner possible•Key Points summarize must-know information, providing an excellent framework for board review

Book Description
Research in electrophysiologic monitoring in anesthesia and intensive care has focussed mostly on questions pertinent for patient care: First how to quantitate drug effects on brain electrical activity and the degree of anesthetic-induced suppression of the central nervous system. Second, how to monitor functional impairment following cerebral ischemia and hypoxia. And third, how to differ entiate between drug-induced effects on the central nervous system and deleteri ous events related to reductions in cerebral blood flow and/or oxygen delivery. Even though progress has been achieved over the last 10 years in this field and fascinating new techniques have been developed, it is still not clear which monitor parameter will provide adequate information on the depth of anes thesia and the analgesic level. Because the central nervous system has been one of the main research areas in our department over the last 10 years, we organized a workshop to summarize the latest developments in central nervous system monitoring. This book comprises the topics of this workshop and is intended to provide insight into the current status of central nervous system monitoring, elucidating possible indications and delineating its limitations.

Book Description
Anesthesia and the Central Nervous System is a textbook for a postgraduate course as well as a reference for all anesthesiologists which presents many of the latest concepts in anesthesiology within a brief formal presentation. An outstanding faculty presents topics relating to the biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology of the nervous system, the anesthetic management of intracranial and spinal cord surgery, and the intensive care management of central nervous system disease. Each chapter is a brief but sharply focused glimpse of the interests in anesthesia. This textbook is the eleventh in a continuing series documenting the proceedings of the Postgraduate Course in Salt Lake City.

Book Description
Although the perioperative care of patients by anesthesiologists draws on diverse clinical skills, the principles of anesthesiology and pain management are rooted in the neurosciences. The Neuroscientific Foundations of Anesthesiology thoroughly examines the anesthetic modulation of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems and will help redefine anesthesiology as a fundamentally neuroscientific field. The book is organized by sections, with each focusing on a different part of the nervous system. State-of-the-art chapters written by thought-leaders in anesthesiology and neuroscience provide a novel and invaluable resource.

Book Description
Physiological Pharmacology: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume I: The Nervous System — Part A, Central Nervous System Drugs focuses on the influence of drugs on the functions of the central nervous system. The selection first offers information on absorption, distribution, and elimination and effects upon physiological systems. Discussions focus on factors that disturb normal sequence of uptake and elimination of volatile drugs; variations in distribution due to systemic effects of anesthetics; factors influencing the uptake of gases by tissues; and theories of general anesthesia. The book also ponders on alcohols, including alcohols acting on the central nervous system; effect of alcohols on and outside the central nervous system; and synergisms and antagonisms between alcohols and other drugs. The publication takes a look at sedatives and hypnotics, effects upon physiological systems, and analgesics and antipyretic drugs. The text also examines non-narcotic analgesics, tranquilizers, and diphenylmethane derivatives. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in the effects of drugs on the central nervous system.

Book Description
This widely praised, first-of-its-kind book has been thoroughly updated, expanded, and enriched with extensive new case material, illustrations, and link-outs to multimedia, practice guidelines, and more. Written and edited by outstanding world experts, this was the first and remains the leading single-source volume on intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM). It is aimed at graduate students and trainees, as well as members of the operative team, including anesthesiologists, technologists, neurophysiologists, surgeons, and nurses. Now commonplace in procedures that place the nervous system at risk, such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, otologic surgery, vascular surgery, and others, effective IOM requires an unusually high degree of coordination among members of the operative team. The purpose of the book is to help students, trainees, and team members acquire a better understanding of one another’s roles and thereby to improve the quality of care and patient safety. From the reviews of the First Edition: “A welcome addition to reference works devoted to the expanding field of nervous system monitoring in the intraoperative period... will serve as a useful guide for many different health care professionals and particularly for anesthesiologists involved with this monitoring modality...An excellent reference...[and] a helpful guide both to the novice and to the developing expert in this field.” ‐‐Canadian Journal of Anesthesia “Impressive... [The book] is well written, indexed, and illustrated...The chapters are all extensively referenced. It is also very good value at the price....I would recommend this book to all residents and especially to all neuroanesthesiologists. It will make a worthwhile addition to their library.” ‐‐Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology
