Book Description
Excerpt from Ancient Lives of Scottish Saints The following pages contain translation of the principal Lives in the new and enlarged edition of Pinkertons Vita Antiques Sanctorum Scotia, which was issued some years ago. Two of them - that of S. Columba by Cuimine the Fair, and the Life or Legend of S. Servanus - are, so far as I can make out, here published in English for the first time. The pieces in the collection just referred to which are not here translated are either passed over entirely or reserved for another possible volume in which may be included translations of Ancient Lives of other of the Scottish saints. All through, my endeavour has been to keep as near to the original text as possible, and to make the translation as accurate a reflection of the different styles of the various authors as my own skill in translating and the idioms of modern English would allow. While making the translations I have consulted such other translations as were accessible to me, and have frequently been indebted to them for what has seemed to me a better rendering than my own. The translation of the Magnus Life was made during my summer vacation in 1890, but while the sheets were passing through the press, I have had the advantage of comparing them with Sir George Dasent's recently published translations of the Greater and Lesser Magnus Sagas. By altering the position of the chapters taken by Jonaeus from the Lesser Saga, and by adding several paragraphs to them from the same source, I have tried to make this Life more full, continuous, and complete, and have included in it the narrative given in the Lesser Saga of the foundation of Kirkwall Cathedral by Rognvald Kali. Book Description
Excerpt from Pinkerton's Lives of the Scottish Saints, Vol. 1 of 2: Revised and Enlarged Pinkerton's intention in connection with this work, which has long been out of print and exceedingly scarce, seems to have been to issue in a handy form the ancient Lives of the most celebrated of the Scottish Saints. The intention was good, and deserves to be extended to the Lives of the less known among those who were once honoured in the national Church. Book Description
Excerpt from A Calendar of Scottish Saints The title of Scottish, applied to the holy ones whose names occur in these short notices, must be understood to refer not so much to their nationality as to the field in which, they laboured or the localities where traces of their cultus are to be found. The Calendar here submitted does not pretend to be exhaustive; the saints therein noted are those who appear prominently in such records as remain to us and in the place-names which still recall their personalities. In this new edition much additional information has been inserted, and many emendations made to render the Calendar as complete as possible.
