Mechanics of Composite Materials
Author: F. W. Wendt
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483147797
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 903
Book Description
Mechanics of Composite Materials contains the proceedings of the Fifth Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 8-10, 1967. The papers explore the mechanics of composite materials for naval applications. The structural requirements of a system and the fundamental mechanical properties of composite materials, as well as the behavior of such materials under various environmental conditions, are discussed. This book is comprised of 40 chapters and begins with an analysis of missile and aircraft systems constraints and operational requirements, along with ship systems constraints and operational requirements, for composite materials. The following chapters focus on structural uses of composites, particularly in naval ships, aircraft, re-entry vehicles, and space vehicle structures; and the micromechanics, structural mechanics, and failure mechanics of composite materials. Problems in the design of joints and attachments are considered, along with the stability of pre-strained laminated media; environmental factors in the design of composite materials; and the effect of water on glass-reinforced plastics. This monograph will be a useful resource for scientists and engineers who are particularly concerned with the mechanics of composite materials.

Stress Analysis of Fiber-reinforced Composite Materials
Author: M. W. Hyer
Publisher: DEStech Publications, Inc
ISBN: 193207886X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 718
Book Description
Updated and improved, Stress Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials, Hyer's work remains the definitive introduction to the use of mechanics to understand stresses in composites caused by deformations, loading, and temperature changes. In contrast to a materials science approach, Hyer emphasizes the micromechanics of stress and deformation for composite material analysis. The book provides invaluable analytic tools for students and engineers seeking to understand composite properties and failure limits. A key feature is a series of analytic problems continuing throughout the text, starting from relatively simple problems, which are built up step-by-step with accompanying calculations. The problem series uses the same material properties, so the impact of the elastic and thermal expansion properties for a single-layer of FR material on the stress, strains, elastic properties, thermal expansion and failure stress of cross-ply and angle-ply symmetric and unsymmetric laminates can be evaluated. The book shows how thermally induced stresses and strains due to curing, add to or subtract from those due to applied loads.Another important element, and one unique to this book, is an emphasis on the difference between specifying the applied loads, i.e., force and moment results, often the case in practice, versus specifying strains and curvatures and determining the subsequent stresses and force and moment results. This represents a fundamental distinction in solid mechanics.

Metal Matrix Composites
Author: C.T. Lynch
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351082892
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 181
Book Description
The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.
