Book Description
"Polymers vary in terms of the monomer/s used; the number, distribution and type of linkage of monomers per molecule; and the side chains and end groups attached. Given this diversity, traditional single-technique approaches to characterization often give limited and inadequate information about a given polymer. Multi-technique but polymer-specific approach was found to be an appropriate alternative. This strategy was applied in characterizing polymers of a wide range of properties from simple polyethylene gylcol, to polycationic chitosan and aminopropyl based oligosiloxanes, and to polydiverse polyfluorinated polyethoxylates. Mass Spectrometry (MS) was used to characterize the different polymers. Different modes of sample introduction, ionization, mass analysis and detection were surveyed. The nature of the monomer units, the size and the polydispersity of polymers are the important factors that affect the detection and quantification of the polymer moieties using MS. MS gave information not just on the molecular weight but also about the repeating units of the polymers. Traditional techniques like size exclusion chromatography and infrared spectroscopy were also used to obtain complementary information on the properties of polymers. Chemometric techniques like partial least squares aided in the statistical evaluation of experimental data. The research works included in this thesis have demonstrated that polymer characterization can be accomplished with the use of a combination of different instrumental and statistical techniques. This strategy allows the researcher to explore additional information about the polymer formulation and correlate these to some observed behaviors or activities."--Samenvatting auteur.

Book Description
Written by expert contributors from the academic and industrial sectors, this book presents traditional and modern approaches to polymer characterization and analysis. The emphasis is on pragmatics, problem solving and property determination; real-world applications provide a context for key concepts. The characterizations focus on organic polymer and polymer product microstructure and composition. Approaches molecular characterization and analysis of polymers from the viewpoint of problem-solving and polymer property characterization, rather than from a technique championing approach Focuses on providing a means to ascertaining the optimum approach or technique(s) to solve a problem/measure a property, and thereby develop an analytical competence in the molecular characterization and analysis of real-world polymer products Provides background on polymer chemistry and microstructure, discussions of polymer chain, morphology, degradation, and product failure and additive analysis, and considers the supporting roles of modeling and high-throughput analysis

Book Description
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is one of the latest and most fascinating new developments in the analysis of organic compounds. Originally developed for the analysis of biomolecules, it has developed into one of the most powerful techniques for the characterization of synthetic polymers. This book describes the fundamentals of the MALDI process and the technical features of MALDI-TOF instrumentation. It reviews the application of MALDI-TOF for identification, chemical and molar mass analysis of synthetic polymers. With many examples, the monograph examines experimental protocols for the determination of endgroups, the analysis of copolymers and additives, and the coupling of liquid chromatography and MALDI-TOF in detail.

Book Description
This book elucidates the peculiar phenomenon of entropy/enthalpy compensation that takes place in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of polymers. Numerous publications, including some books, are devoted to molecular characterization of synthetic polymers, materials presently produced in large and steadily growing quantities, applying methods of HPLC. A knowledge of the molecular characteristics of polymers is indispensable, not only for their proper applications but also for their recycling and remediation. Polymer scientists generally focus on synthesis and potential applications of polymers while not giving due attention to an important central link, their comprehensive characterization in context of development of structure-property correlations. To fill this gap is one of the aims of the present book. The process of entropy/enthalpy compensation plays a decisive role in the advanced method of polymer characterization such as liquid chromatography at critical conditions, eluent gradient interaction chromatography, and temperature gradient interaction chromatography. All chemists working on any aspect of polymer science will find this book a valuable resource for the development of structure-property correlations.
