Book Description
Presenting a thorough overview of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), this book introduces the tools for the analysis and design of BICM transceivers. It explains in details the functioning principles of BICM and proposes a refined probabilistic modeling of the reliability metrics–the so-called L-values–which are at the core of the BICM receivers. Alternatives for transceiver design based on these models are then studied. Providing new insights into the analysis of BICM, this book is unique in its approach, providing a general framework for analysis and design, focusing on communication theoretic aspects of BICM transceivers. It adopts a tutorial approach, explains the problems in simple terms with the aid of multiple examples and case studies, and provides solutions using accessible mathematical tools. The book will be an excellent resource for researchers in academia and industry: graduate students, academics, development engineers, and R & D managers. Key Features: Presents an introduction to BICM, placing it in the context of other coded modulation schemes Offers explanations of the functioning principles and design alternatives Provides a unique approach, focusing on communication theory aspects Shows examples and case studies to illustrate analysis and design of BICM Adopts a tutorial approach, explaining the problems in simple terms and presenting solutions using accessible mathematical tools

Book Description
DFT modulated filter banks for non-orthogonal multicarrier transmission are considered a strong tool to implement both dynamic spectrum access and spectrum sensing in cognitive radio systems where signaling schemes have to meet different objectives. A constrained optimization approach is presented to design a cognitive radio transceiver which can be tailored to system specifications with a reasonable trade-off between performance and implementation efficiency. In interweave cognitive radio, the secondary user receiver is synchronized in time and frequency by designing a synthesis filter bank preamble with periodic symbols in analogy to short training fields in IEEE 802.11a. A simple post-detection integration at the secondary user receiver is employed for differently coherent detection. In underlay cognitive radio, a novel transmission scheme for secondary user power adaptation is proposed aiming to minimize the secondary user average probability of error for bit-interleaved coded modulation. The powers of the subcarrier signals are adapted subject to total power and stochastic chance-based interference constraints in order to provide a confidence level for limiting the interference at the licensed primary user receiver.

Book Description
Adaptive Wireless Transceivers provides the reader with a broad overview of near-instantaneously adaptive transceivers in the context of TDMA, CDMA and OFDM systems. The adaptive transceivers examined employ powerful turbo codecs, turbo equalisers and space-time codecs, equipping the reader with a future-proof technological road map. It demonstrates that adaptive transceivers are capable of mitigating the channel quality fluctuations of the wireless channel as a lower-complexity alternative to space-time coding. By contrast, if the higher complexity of multiple transmitters and multiple receiver-assisted systems is deemed acceptable, the advantages of adaptability erode. Provides an in-depth introduction to channel equalisers and Kalman filtering and discusses the associated complexity versus performance trade-offs Introduces wideband near-instantaneously adaptive transceivers and studies their performance both with and without turbo channel coding Describes how to optimise adaptive modulation mode switching and highlights a range of practical considerations Introduces neural network based channel equalisers and discusses Radial Basis Function (RBF) assisted equalisers embedded into adaptive modems supported by turbo channel coding and turbo channel equalisation Employs the above adaptive principles also in the context of CDMA and OFDM transceivers and discusses the pros and cons of space-time coding versus adaptive modulation Researchers, advanced students and practising development engineers working in wireless communications will all find this valuable text an informative read.
