Analysing the Endgame
"Endgame" by Samuel Beckett. Analysis in the Context of Pragmatics
Author:
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 334665270X
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 86
Book Description
Research Paper (undergraduate) in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2022, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to explore and analyse Samuel Beckett's ludicrous drama, Endgame, in the context of Pragmatics in general and violations of Conversational Principles in particular, as well as in the context of Pragmatics. Using Grice's idea of Conversational Principles, the study seeks to evaluate the selected conversational interactions in a formalised manner. Conversational theatre is characterised by the skillful use of language as a potent tool for communication; nevertheless, in Beckett's play, characters are concerned with various elements of language and its usage. The dialogues utilised in an absurd play are nonsensical exchanges in which there is no sense of cohesion between the characters. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for the study of many elements of language. It appears silly, yet it serves as a means of communication between the characters. The characters in this story frequently utilise broken words, make nonsensical comments, repeat themselves, and hesitate for no apparent reason, which is typical of the genre. His adept use of informal language and fragmented sentences exemplifies how language should be used in a natural setting.

Book Description
This is the first truly modern one-volume endgame encyclopaedia. New time-controls involve competitive games being played to a finish in one session, so it is especially important that chess-players understand the key endgame principles. This book provides comprehensive assistance for any players wishing to study the endgame. In addition to a feast of detailed analysis, the authors emphasize the practical side of endgame play, describing rules of thumb, principles, and thinking methods. Fundamental Chess Endings is both the ideal endgame reference work, and a book that can profitably and enjoyably be read from start to finish. Book jacket.

Endgame for ETA
Author: Teresa Whitfield
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190238046
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 437
Book Description
The violent Basque separatist group ETA took shape in Franco's Spain, yet claimed the majority of its victims under democracy. For most Spaniards it became an aberration, a criminal and terrorist band whose persistence defied explanation. Others, mainly Basques (but only some Basques) understood ETA as the violent expression of a political conflict that remained the unfinished business of Spain's transition to democracy. Such differences hindered efforts to 'defeat' ETA's terrorism on the one hand and 'resolve the Basque conflict' on the other for more than three decades. Endgame for ETA offers a compelling account of the long path to ETA's declaration of a definitive end to its armed activity in October 2011. Its political surrogates remain as part of a resurgence of regional nationalism - in the Basque Country as in Catalonia - that is but one element of multiple crises confronting Spain. The Basque case has been cited as an ex- ample of the perils of 'talking to terrorists'. Drawing on extensive field research, Teresa Whitfield argues that while negotiations did not prosper, a form of 'virtual peacemaking' was an essential complement to robust police action and social condemnation. Together they helped to bring ETA's violence to an end and return its grievances to the channels of normal politics.
