Los aprendizajes de los estudiantes no se pueden medir directamente y suelen ser inferidos a partir de los puntajes observados en pruebas de rendimiento. De aqui su importancia en la evaluacion de los aprendizajes. El puntaje es una medida ordinal y a este nivel son debiles las inferencias. Las escalas de intervalo, como las usadas para medir longitudes, permiten hacer una medicion mas fina. El modelo de Rasch posibilita la construccion de una escala de intervalo formada por preguntas ordenadas segun su dificultad permitiendo mejorar la medicion de los aprendizajes de los examinados. En cuanto a pruebas de rendimiento se refiere, el modelo postula que la probabilidad que tiene un estudiante de responder correctamente una pregunta depende de la diferencia entre su nivel de habilidad y el nivel de dificultad de la pregunta. Esto supone ubicar las medidas de los estudiantes y de las preguntas en una misma escala, con las mismas unidades, lo que constituye una ventaja. De esta forma el modelo de Rasch se convierte en un modelo de comportamiento deseable que provee informacion adicional para respaldar los juicios de valor que hagamos acerca del aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes."
