All that the writer ventures to hope is that he has suggested thoughts upon one of the most important problems in our national life, and that he has been able to give sufficient historical grounds for the suggestions made. The materials lay at hand; he has merely sought to weave them together. In preparing the Second Edition attention has been paid to the suggestions made upon points of detail by reviewers and others. For this valuable help, as well as for the generous welcome which the book has received, the author desires to express his very sincere gratitude. The Index to Authors at the end of the book is intended to enable readers to obtain a more connected view of the contributions to English educational opinion of the principal writers and theorists referred to. Book Description
Excerpt from A Guide to the History of Education But England compares poorly in this respect with some of the neighbouring lands. Our school and college histories are numerous enough; but they too easily drop to the level of anecdote, personal or architectural, and too often remain silent on matters which would indicate advance, or the reverse, in educational theory or practice. In fact, much spade-work must be done before we can hope to possess a conspectus of what English schools have attempted or accomplished between the early medieval period and the present day. When that work is surveyed in the light of con temporary life, social, political, and economic, we shall be in a position to generalize about the English theory of education. Book Description
Excerpt from The Evolution of Educational Theory The first and the most natural consequence of a historical survey of philosophic thought is to induce despair of philosophy. It presents us with the spectacle of the human mind endeavouring to understand the central facts of experience, and failing, in every age and every country, to give an indisputable or final explanation of any one of them. The only reward of historical research in this department seems to be a collection of inconclusive and mutually inconsistent opinions Inflated into theories of a reality which exceeds mans utmost powers to comprehend. Book Description
Excerpt from Syllabus of Lectures on the History of Education: With Selected Bibliographies and Suggested Readings This book is a revision of a Syllabus of Lectures used during the past three years with a class in the History of Education. In revising it for printing I have made such changes in arrangement and such additions and omissions as an experience of three years has seemed to indicate as desirable. It is hoped that in this new form the Syllabus and appended bibliographies will prove useful as a practical guide to teachers, librarians, and individual students. The Syllabus 1s based on a combination of the lecture and library methods, with occasional class discussions and reports. Instead of confining students to a few text-books, the aim has been to give them breadth of view by familiarizing them with the literature of the subject, and to provide some training in methods of independent work. An attempt has been made to study the history of education as a phase of the history of civilization. Accordingly a close connection has been maintained between the history of the civilization of a people and the ideas on and progress of education among them. Significant political events, changes in religious ideas, the attitude of the leaders toward the great problems, the progress of scientific discovery and invention, and the rise and progress of the scientific method and national spirit have been considered as a back-ground for the study of the history of educational theories and practice. An attempt has also been made to separate what was mere theory from what was actual practice, what was particular or local from what was general; to give some coherence to that confusing period between the Protestant Revolt and the nineteenth century; to set the work of the theorists and the reformers in a proper relation to one another and to the times in which they lived, and to point out how far they have influenced the present; and finally, to sketch the great organizing movements of the nineteenth century, taking Germany, France, and England as types. Only the slightest outline of the history of education in America is given; just enough to show the relation of the European development to our own, this subject being dealt with in another course.
