Several operational forecast models are now available for iceberg trajectory forecasting. Most are based on an exact solution of the force balance equation for the iceberg and assume implicitly that these forces are quantifiable in a forecast situation. This is not the case as many factors, such as iceberg geometry and future currents or winds, are imperfectly known and degrade the accuracy of predication. The principal shortcomings of deterministic models stems from our inability to forecast oceanic eddies which account for a large part of iceberg motion.

In 1985 the Environmental Studies Research Funds financed the development of an Operational Iceberg Trajectory Forecasting Model for the Grand Banks of Newfoundland (de Margerie et al, 1986) as a potential ice management tool to support offshore oil field activity. A recommendation arising from the work called for a field implementation of the model in order to compile comments and suggestions from users. One of the objectives of the present study, which was initiated by the ESRF in 1990, addressed this recommendation. The second objective of the work was to undertake a verification of the iceberg position predictions that were output by the model, the first to be undertaken using an independent data set.
