Book Description
The influence of structural defects on the optical properties of thin vacuum-evaporated films of silver has been investigated. The technique of preparation and control of the annealing are described. The crystallographic structure of the films has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The possibilities of further improving the structure of the films is discussed. The optical absorption is due to various mechanisms which were carefully separated: intraband and interband transitions and plasma oscillations. It was found that the optical mass mo of the conduction electrons is definitely smaller than unity (0.86

Book Description
Brambing and Raether (Phys. Rev-Letters. v15 p882 1965) reported the detection of radiation from the electron plasma in metal films excited by an obliquely incident optical beam. Attempts to repeat this experiment using light from a hydrogen discharge lamp focused onto a 300A silver film did not yield a positive result. Further attempts using a higher intensity light source and a more sensitive detection system are planned. Certain relevant aspects of plasma oscillations in metals are discussed.
