Book Description
Excerpt from Introduction to Bible Study It will greatly enhance Bible study to graphically relate one subject with another. One may study the history in the Bible, but it Will be more real and valuable if the man who helped make the history stands out in bold relief, and with him is associated the geography, conditions and events. We may make an excursion into the country for the purpose of fishing, and that may be our main object, but the true fisherman and lover of nature also learns something about the stream, the flowers and the birds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bible as Literature: An Introduction For some time past there has been a growing conviction of the need of a more complete and comprehensive study of the Bible in all the colleges. Quite recently the matter has received new emphasis and practical direction. A complete course of Bible study has been outlined by a joint committee representing the Eastern and Western sections of the Association of College Instructors in the Bible, the departments of colleges and universities and of teacher training of the Religious Education Association, the Student Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A., and Sunday School Council. The proposed curriculum is not merely a theoretical outline but has already been tested, in part, at some of the leading colleges of the country. The complete course will include the following books: "Old Testament History," by Prof. Ismar J. Peritz, of Syracuse University; "New Testament History," by Dr. Harris Franklin Rail, President of Iliff School of Theology; "The Bible as Literature," by Prof. Irving F. Wood and Prof. Elihu Grant, of Smith College; "Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible," by Prof. Theodore G. Soares, University of Chicago; and "The History, Principles and Methods of Religious Education," by Prof. F. H. Swift, University of Minnesota. The publishers take pleasure in announcing that the volumes on New Testament History and The Bible as Literature are now ready. Professor Peritz's volume on Old Testament History will be published in time for use during the second half of the college year 1914-1915, and the remaining volumes by Professors Soares and Swift in time for the opening of the 1915-1916 college year. These books have been prepared with a view to the requirements of the college course and the needs of the student. Book Description
Excerpt from Bible Manual: An Introduction to the Study of Scripture History With Analyses of the Books of the Bible 1. The Book of Genesis contains principally the family records of the Hebrew Patriarchs, to whom the promise of a Deliverer, originally given to Eve, was renewed. It is rather a series of biographies than a history. The preface to the Bible (Gen. i.-ii. 3) contains a brief account of the creation of the universe by God, and of man's high position, as king of every living thing on earth. The inspired writer then proceeds to the covenant made with Adam, his honour and fall. Sentence was passed upon him; but the prospect of deliverance from it was held out. The division of the human race into the families of Cain and Seth, their different characters and fortunes, form the next part of the book. Every kind of wickedness resulted from the union of these families in course of time; and, with the exception of eight persons, the whole race was at last swept away by a flood. 2. The tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which the Creator planted in Eden, were sacraments of the covenant made with Adam by God. Book Description
Excerpt from A Compendious Introduction to the Study of the Bible, Vol. 1 of 4 The little Manual, now offered to the Public, has been undertaken in consequence of requests long since communicated to the Author, and frequently repeated, that he would prepare an Analysis or Abridgment of the four octavo volumes of his larger "Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures;" as an assistant to the Studies of Gentlemen at the Universities and other Seminaries of Theological Literature, as also of those individuals who may respectively possess that work, and to whom such an auxiliary would be acceptable. At the same time, the present volume has been so arranged, as to form a Comprehensive Guide to the Study of the Bible, adapted lo the use of general readers: it will be found to contain, I. A Summary of the Evidences of the Genuineness, Inspiration, &c. of the Holy Scriptures, refuting the most modern objections of Infidels; II. An Outline of the Literary History, and Interpretation of the Bible; III. A Compendium of Biblical Geography and Antiquities; and IV. Introductory Prefaces to the several Books of Scripture. Book Description
Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of the Holy Scriptures The present volume is not an altogether new work. As stated in the title-page, it is an abridged edition of the larger volume on General Introduction which the present writer published a few years ago. Although this larger work was well received by the public, as proved by. The fact that its third edition is nearly exhausted, professors of Holy Scripture often expressed the wish that a shorter form of it could be issued. An abridged edition, it was argued, would enable students to cover more easily the ground of General Introduction within the short space of time at their disposal, while the unabridged work would prove to them a valuable book of reference, and continue to be useful to priests on the mission and to readers generally. It was also supposed that in its shorter form the General Introduction would be wel come as a text-book in colleges and other institutions where the larger work had but little chance to be adopted. It is for these and similar reasons that the present edition has been prepared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
