It was written at Heiligenblut, beneath the glaciers of the Gross Glockner, during the summer of 1870 - that year which saw the fall of the French and the foundation of the German Empire. I wrote it originally for lectures, and when I sent it to press in 1872, I did not alter its form in any essential particular.
