Book Description
Excerpt from The Rhine Tun publication of Views Hueo's '3 Rhine in Paris cre ated a great sensation, which was immediately shared in England, where two translations of the work appeared in the same year. The best and most complete of these has been followed in the present, the first American edition of the work. The quaintness, point and brilliancy of the author it will be seen have not been lost sight of. In the original the Tour was accompanied by a long historical dissertation, an elaborate argument on the Affairs of Eu. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pilgrims of the Rhine I have made the experiment of selecting for the main interest of my work the simplest materials, and weaving upon them the ornaments given chiefly to subjects of a more fanciful and ideal nature. I know not how far I have succeeded, but various reasons have conspired to make this the work, above all others that I have written, which has given me the most delight (though not unmixed with melan choly) in producing, and in which my mind, for the time, has been the most completely absorbed. But the ardour of composition is often disproportioned to the merit of the work; and the public sometimes, nor unjustly, avenges itself for that forgetfulness of its existence, which makes the chief charm of an author's solitude - and the happiest, if not the wisest. Book Description
Excerpt from Legends of the Rhine Then the sound of a melodious female voice Speaking the English language fell On my ears. I looked round. A girl was bending over a book, and entertaining her father and mother by reading something of Special interest and beauty. I listened and recognised some of my own sentences rendered into the speech of Shakespeare. These three were learning to feel the glamour of the Lorelei legend as I had felt it. I confess my pulse beat quicker as I heard my poor endeavours highly praised, and I could not refrain from advancing and thanking the young reader for her kindly appreciation. She seemed delighted when she discovered that I was the author, and rose to greet me in the most amiable manner. I complimented the travellers on the fact, that during the last century the Rhine seemed to have become for the English people that home of romance which we Germans sought to find in Italy. The girl smiled, and remarked that I must pay that compliment to her mother in particular, as she was by birth an English woman. But the head of the family hastened to add that among Americans, whom he might speak for, the enthusiasm for the beauties of the Rhine was not less than among their anglo-saxon cousins. These two nations which are bound by so many ties to each other, and also to ourselves, were thus represented before me. The English-speaking people undoubtedly form by far the largest contingent of our Rhine travellers, and it was pleasant indeed to receive so fine a testimonial to the beauties of my homeland. Book Description
Excerpt from The Heidenmauer, or the Benedictines: A Legend of the Rhine There was still abundant evidence visible at Brussels, of the fierce nature of the struggle that had expelled the Dutch. Forty-six shells were sticking in the side of a single building of no great size, while ninety-three grape shot were buried in one of its pilasters! In our own rooms, too, there were fearful signs of war. The mirrors were in fragments, the walls broken by langrage, the woodwork of the beds was pierced by shot, and the furniture was marked by rude encounters. The trees of the park were mutilated in a thousand places, and one Of the little Cupids, that we had left laughing above the principal gate three years before, was now maimed and melancholy, whilst its companion had altogether taken ight on the wings Of a cannon-ball. Though dwelling in the very centre of so many hostile vestiges, we happily escaped the sight Of human blood; for we understood from the obliging Swiss who presides over the hotel that his cellars, at all times in repute, were in more than usual request during the siege. From so much proof we were left to infer, that the Belgians had made stout battle for their emancipation, one sign at least that they merited to be free. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rhine, Vol. 2 of 2 The Instability of earthly Grandeur. Worms. Past and Present. The Cathedral. Its Neighbour. Mannheim. IT is nearly dusk. That indescribable melancholy which takes possession of the heart at the close of day seems to extend over the entire landscape. Which is really sad at such times? Is it nature, or is it our selves? A white mist rises from the depths of the immense valley of the Vosges the tall reeds along the river-bank sigh lugubriously the steamboat struggles on through the water like a big, tired dog; all the weary, drowsy passengers have gone down into the cabin, which is filled with bundles, valises, loaded tables, and sleeping people. The deck is almost deserted. Three German students still linger there, silent and motion less, smoking their pipes, without making a gesture or uttering a word, - three statues; I make a fourth as I stand staring out into space.
