Satiation and Lateral Inhibition as Explanations of Figural After-effects
Author: Wencke Jenssen Seltzer
Publisher:

Category : Psychophysiology
Languages : en
Pages : 26
Book Description
This investigation attempts to test certain implications of a new theoretical approach to figural after-effects. A review of the Kohler-Wallach approach is made and objections are raised to indicate that their approach is inadequate. A recent study of figural after-effects by Deutsch indicate predictions which are contradictory to predictions of the Kohler-Wallach position. An experimental situation is presented in which the satiational approach would predict a shrinkage of the T-figure, in contradiction to Deutsch's lateral inhibition proposal which predicts an expansion of the T-figure. The results in this study favor Deutsch's theory. However, a few judgements made by the experimental group deviated from the theoretical prediction. This deviation, however, could very probably be due to the construction of the card, which very likely tends to increase judgements of smaller.
