Book Description
This engaging, succinct text is an introduction to both phonetics and phonology as applied to the teaching of pronunciation to English language learners. Section 1 selectively covers the main areas of phonetics and phonology, without going into any area in more depth than the average English language teacher requires or that the average English language teacher trainee can handle. Section 2 focuses on practical issues related to learners and how they learn languages, and what represents good practice in terms of classroom activities for pronunciation—including aspects such as targets, motivation and priorities. The chapters end with activities to help the reader understand concepts. Section 3 provides innovative sample activities which put into practice the theoretical points covered in the first two sections, answers to the various exercises, recommended further reading (both print and non-print), a glossary of technical phonetic terms, and a bibliography of works on pronunciation teaching. The text is accompanied by a Companion Website with audio recordings of model pronunciations and audio material relating to the activities.

Book Description
Updated and aligned to the Common Core State Standards, Discovering Voice is a collection of classroom exercises that helps students deeply understand the reading and writing of complex text. The lessons, which cover diction, figurative language, imagery, syntax, and tone, help students understand voice in what they read and encourage them to develop a strong, personal voice in their own writing. Every voice lesson includes a quotation selected from a wide range of fiction and nonfiction text, two discussion questions, and an exercise that encourages students to practice what they have learned about the elements of voice. These lessons are specifically designed for students in middle and high school. The lessons provide focused practice for a specific element of voice and take only 10 to 20 minutes of class time. Discovering Voice lessons fit well with any curriculum. As students work with the elements that comprise voice, they will improve their ability to critically analyze text. Students will also learn to apply the elements of voice to their own writing, creating a clear voice of their own.

Book Description
Excerpt from Ear and Voice Training by Means of Elementary Sounds of Language The common existence of abnormal sense-perception among school-children is a serious obstacle to teaching, and should receive special attention for its removal. This condition is most obvious in the defective perceptions of sounds; and it may also be frequently found in relation to form and color. The faulty, indistinct articulation in speech; the frequent mistakes made in hearing what is said; the inability to distinguish musical sounds; the lack of accuracy in recognizing the sounds and the forms of letters; and the failure, by some, to distinguish colors - all indicate lack of proper development of sense-perceptions. Some persons attribute the lack of distinct perceptions of sounds to partial deafness. Careful observation and long experience with children lead to the conclusion that most of the common defects in sound-perception exist because of a lack of proper training during childhood to develop this power of the mind into activity. Careful observation has led to the belief, also, that many cases of supposed color-blindness are only instances of undeveloped color-sense. Book Description
The book contains contributions from practitioners and theoreticians who explore the pronunciation of English from various perspectives: phonetic, phonological, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic. In accordance with the unifying theme of the volume, individual contributions investigate the characteristics of a foreign accent, its production and perception, study the development of methods and techniques in pronunciation teaching, evaluate their use in classroom materials and in the classroom itself, and investigate the conditions for second language learning and teaching from the perspective of learners and teachers. The book offers a unique combination of a scholarly research with practical applications, inspired over the years by the work of Professor WĹ‚odzimierz Sobkowiak, who has researched pronunciation teaching and pioneered technology-oriented, corpus-based approaches to the study of English pronunciation in Poland.
