Book Description
Interferometer measurements are given of the flow fields near two-dimensional wedge and circular-arc sections at zero angle of attack. Pressure distributions and drag coefficients as functions of Mach number were obtained and the wedge data are compared with theory. It is shown that the local Mach number at any point on the surface of a finite three dimensional body or an unswept two-dimensional body, moving through an infinite fluid, has a stationary value at Mach number 1 and, in fact, remains nearly constant for a range of speeds below and above Mach number 1. On the basis of this concept and the experimental data, pressure distributions and drag coefficients for the wedge and circular-arc sections are presented throughout the entire transonic range of velocities.

A Study of the Transient Behavior of Shock Waves in Transonic Channel Flows
Author: Robert V. Hess
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 734
Book Description
The accuracy of the result obtained in a fundamental paper by Kantrowitz (NACA TN 1225) that a small short-time lowering of the back pressure in steady, shock-free, transonic diffuser flow causes a stationary or trapped shock to form near the critical sonic channel throat is investigated by considering the contribution of a higher-order term in the short-time calculations which was neglected in Kantrowitz's paper. In this higher approximation to the short-time effects, the shock is no longer stationary or trapped unless it is supported by a negative steady-flow back pressure; the result thus is no long in disagreement with steady-flow solutions for stationary shocks.

Expected Number of Maxima and Minima of a Stationary Random Process with Non-Gaussian Frequency Distribution
Author: Franklin W. Diederich
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Distribution (Probability theory)
Languages : en
Pages : 734
Book Description
A method is outlined for calculating the expected number of maxima or minima of a random process with non-Gaussian frequency distribution from the statistical moments of the process and its first two derivatives. This method is based on an estimate of the joint frequency function of the process and its first two derivatives given by mesm of a generalized form of Edgeworth's series; the procedure thus consists essentially in applying a correction to the results for a Gaussian process. The functions required in this procedure are calculated for the first two correction terms; therefore, the effects of skewness and kurtosis can be calculated, provided the required moments are known. Expressions are given for these moments in terms of multiple correlation functions and multi-spectra, and the relations between these functions for a random output of a linear system and those for the random input are indicated.

High-resolution Autoradiography
Author: George C. Towe
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aeronautics
Languages : en
Pages : 692
Book Description
Autoradiography has been used only to a rather limited extent in metallurgical studies. Probably the major deterring factor has been that the autoradiographic systems have not provided the high resolution required in many investigations. A general discussion of the requirements for high-resolution autoradiography is presented in this report including detecting layer as well as radioactive-sample specifications. The need for a thin photographic emulsion in close contact with the metal surface is emphasized. The desirability of using favorable radiation (e.g., low-energy beta radioactivity) is also discussed.
